Nada. Saw it in the garage amidst some of my broke-down ATVs. Might get it out for a spin later today- haven't driven it in what seems like forever!

Installed new front wheel bearings. From the looks of the brake shoes it looks like I may have to expedite the brake job.

Today, I drained the oil and started taking things apart to get to the alternator before I was rudely interrupted by the fact I was missing a tool Mad Tomorrow, I'll finish the oil change and hopefully get my new alternator installed.

Before dropping the rail off to BugZyla sometime here soon, I decided to pull the plugs and check the condition. #1 and #3 had some heavy dry black powdery buildup. Cleaned and re-gapped all of them and put them back in....except that I had hard time getting the #4 plug back in and it dropped inside the tin. Had to pull the intake manifold on that side to be able to move the tin enough to get it out. What should have taken about 30 minutes took over an hour. But at least I learned something....use a piece of hose when removing/installing the plugs!

Welded my seat mounts and welded plates on to mount the front bumper.

Today, I made my first rookie mistake. After dismantling and unscrewing literally everything in sight, I realized that I had to take the engine out of the car to get to the back side of the alternator, which unfortunately I can't do at the moment due to some random circumstances. So, I spent the whole day taking apart my engine just to look at it at put it back together. I've almost got everything back in place but it's freaking cold outside and I needed to come in and warm up. Anyway, my plan to replace the alternator in my bug pretty much was a waste of time. So now I'll just keep on driving with my redneck solution... back up battery in the car at all times and then charge the dead battery in my apartment Laughing

The oil change is going better. As soon as everything is screwed back on, I'll pour in some new oil and hooooopefully everything will work like it's supposed to Confused

A 36 mm socket and a long 1/2 rachet works if the nut was correctly torqued. If you got the one put on with an 1/2 " impact only the fan shroud with the alt/gen attached needs removing.

You want a challenge VW TOURAG. 30 plus hours to change an alt. Seat comes out to change battery. Another hour. Change the battery ECM does not recognize worn key. VW won't give you the code tow to dealer pay 2 hours @135 per hour to cut and code new key key not included.
The smart flat rate techs change it without removing the engine but only VW techs get the secret code from VOA via satalite.

Just tooled around in it looking at houses in NC. Got a bit chilly so we stopped after a couple hours. Don't quite have the heat up to par yet. Looking at getting a thermostat/dog house flap set from volkaholic (the samba) so I can get the engine temp up. Any way, I took it down to NC to play over the holidays but since the east coast got nailed with all the snow, no one would let me play on thier turf. Crying or Very sad

Today I worked on the Squareback. I made front and rear skid plates. I met a guy who runs a metal fabrication shop in Pasadena that bent my plate for me. He was very cool, and I'd highly recommend him to anyone. His shop made me drool insanely. He had every tool imaginable, and many beyond imagination. It's called Faith Fabrication and it's on Raymond if anyone is interested. Anyway... here's a couple of photos:

My pet peeves: You guys know about one of them: FOUR TAILLIGHTS ON A BAJA. It's goofy, gay, and I hate looking at four dag nab taillights!!! Another one: SKID PLATES WITH BOLT HEADS STICKING OUT OF THEM. Why not just dig a little deeper and countersink them? It's just a much nicer touch.

Fiddling with things, and having driven the Squareback a few days ago, I found that the front end was making all sorts of crazy noises over bumps. Robert was also complaining that it was wandering a bit. I checked and found that the tie rod ends where all completely toast. I replaced all the ends, and while I was in there I sleeved the long rod, and put a steel dowel inside the shorty.

Having done that, I also fabricated, installed, and painted the rear bar that the safety harnesses are going to attach to. I think it came out pretty slick. I can't wait to get the harnesses in tomorrow!

Here are a couple pix from yesterday, too:

The passenger door was falling off, so I had to re-weld the hinge.

I installed a killer stereo in the glovebox to prevent thievery, complete with 6x9's, and amp, and a subwoofer. The sub's under the hood (trunk), but I forgot to take a picture.

A couple of "Work In Progress" shots:

Little by little....
