Hi all,
I was wondering if any one ever considered an external roll cage on a baja. (kind of like the landrover) The baja interior is already tight, then cram a cage in there and it is even tighter. I can see having to do that for the bajas with the suspensions tied into the cage, but an external cage on a basicaly stock baja with the hoops tied into a body lift would seem to provide decent protection. All the rollover pictures I have seen show the roof crushed down to the cage anyway. It seems a cage on the outside would provide more protection for the roof. Also, with this setup, you could make a killer roof rack. Any thoughts?

Like pink steel-toed boots, it's certainly a practical idea, but would look kinda gay in my opinion.

"pink steel-toed boots"

I am not sure I have ever seen them. It must be a Samba thing. As far as being gay looking, you are the one from California. I guess you would know.
I think it could be cool if done right. I think it would be a good seller also, for someone that wanted to market a fully welded cage/roof rack/body lift combo that does not require choping up the body to install.

Well put. And for the record, I'm an Arizona native who thinks the only thing Kalifornia has going for it is the climate.

It's definitely a taste thing. I have yet to see an exo-cage that I like the looks of on anything. That of course, would just be my opinion. Rolling Eyes

I noticed someone dinged me for a Karma point for that remark. Oh well, an opinion was asked. An opinion was given.

Why not just build a rail and ditch the body all together?

I have had rails, but dont like the rocks, dust, rain and such. Being 6'2" with 56" sholders, I am shying away from puting a cage in. If I wanted to look pritty, I would go buy a great big 4X4 and stick a quad in back. All my bajas have been ugly. In the baja world, the uglier the better in my opinion. No worries about it getting scrached.
By the way, I dinged you. Feel free to ding be back if it makes you feel better. I was not sure what the Karma thing was. It said "Smite," and I smote away.
If anyone has a technical reason why this will not work, other than it would look gay, I would be happy to hear from you.

Thanks,

While I do see advantages with things like innovative ways to tie in the roof rack, etc., I think the weight disadvantage, as well as complexity, are going to be significant. It's going to take a bit more tubing to go around the outside of the car, which is going to translate to increased weight.

From a strength standpoint, my impression of the exocages is that they were primarily for the crawlers and such, to help protect the sides, etc. of their vehicles while navigating tight spots on trails.

And, now that you've smitten me for just giving my opinion (you did ASK for "thoughts" in your opening post, after all), I'll go ahead and jump on the bandwagon and reciprocate. I'm sure you ASSumed I was one of your originals 'smiters' but I wasn't. I just thought the pink steel-toed boot comment was funny.

Welcome to Azbaja! I've always enjoyed that this site didn't have the bitchy whiny waaah-waaaah feel that is present in this thread. Nice. If you come across some thicker skin on sale somewhere, you might wanna consider it.

NEW CONCEPTS COME FROM THOSE WHO DO THEYRE' OWN THING !

If you want to do the external roll cage, GO FOR IT!
it just might catch on,I too am a oversized dude.(6'4"-250)
the roll cage in my bug I had to customize to fit. lost all kinds of movement
and ended up trashing the idea, TILL NOW, I am gonna set up an external frame close to the body for several reasons, one being that I can use the outer bars for mounting accessories that fit my personal needs instead of relying on the sheet metal to be ridged enough for such items.
if you are so inclined to do so,you should use 120ga tubing and seal the welds air tight-add a small 125 psi air compressor and voila" portable dual function item.--harbor freight has such a compressor, mine fits under the rear bench just fine.

I've always thought that was a cool idea, but worry about the long-term corrosion implications working on the inside of something as vital as the roll cage, since compressed air is laden with condensation. Without being able to see the inside of the cage to inspect periodically, there's no way to know when your structural integrity has disappeared. No?

It has been an idea I have been toying with. The hardest parts will be tying it into the tunnel, rear torsion housing, installing cross bracing and securing the shoulder straps. Without that it would just be a show cage. For the record, 57 BAJA is normally nice someone must of put coal in his Baja's fuel tank.

I personally just don't like the look. I'm not saying don't do it. I'm just saying I personally think it looks goofy (or gay, as I stated it earlier). Interior cages are, pound for pound, going to be much stronger. The span of tubing is going to be shorter, making it a more solid design. Additionally, you'll be able to add strength and rigidity by welding supports to strong items like the shock towers, tunnel, and torsion housing. you can also use "X" bracing to add rigidity.

I'm no small dude either (6'4" about 225). Things are pretty tight inside my car. However, they are comfortable. I have a body lift, which REALLY helps. The challenge I had was how to build a car that I could fit in WITHOUT having access to a tubing bender.

For me, I think it came out OK, and I still fit in it after almost 20 years, so I'm happy.

Build what you want.... You're not building it for me. Please, however, don't come in here looking for opinions unless you can handle someone else's that is different. This is AZBAJA, but this ain't no saloon in Tombstone. None of us are looking for a gun fight.

I PUT A SMALL FILTER ON THE INTAKE-PLUMED TO A WATER SEPARATOR(normally for the outlet)then into the compressor.
I plan to add a air tool oiler to the down flow side of the separator specifically for this concern and to oil my tools in the process.....
