I am wanting to put a roll cage in my baja, I know i'm going to use 1.5" dom. My question is do i use .095 or .120 wall, Thinking .120 wall but would that be over kill. My plans are to exstend 6" to 8" on the front with 6over beam, 3x3 or bigger in the rear. Not sure if i will be using torsion bars or coil overs As of right now i'm in South dakota Evil or Very Mad . But after a year or 2 we will be moving back to southwest so i know that i will be in desset playing again.

095 works great...all the class 11 roll cages use 095 and seem to protect just fine...

i think i will use .120 wall for bottom rails and main hoops. Then .095 wall for the rest of the cage. How many sticks of dom will i need to do a full cage like class 5 baja's

well...

""""Class 5: Vehicle must be a VW Sedan Type 1 Hardtop or Convertible as delivered from the factory.

Horsepower: 175-250
Wheel Travel: 12-18 Front, 18-24 Rear
Weight: 2200-2400
Top Speed: 105
Cost New: $50,000-90,000
Cost Per Prep: $4,000-8,000

Basic Rules: Front and rear suspension is open, as long as it retains stock concept. Length, width, and manufacturer is open, as long as the wheelbase does not exceed 105 1/2'' at ride height.
Engine Rules: Any manufacturer air cooled, 4 cylinder, single cam, pushrod, VW concept engine is allowed. VW 4 cylinder water cooled engines may also be used. Displacement is open."""""

Are you really planning on getting 175 to 250 horse out of your VW motor, ridiculous amount of travel front and rear, and have 4-8k just for race prep?? Shocked

If not, just go with class 5-1600 or class 11 roll cage...

If so, based on mccolery5..

Nice link.
And I feel you're pain. Only raced once, and it was the sickest thing ever.

Mine started with a bolt in cage for the 2 hoops. Then I think we used ~80-100 ft of 1.5 tubing and ~20 ft of 1.0. I want to re-do my rear bumper and planning on 2 sticks ~40 ft.

Thats how we started too. Accept the buggy caught fire half way thru the race, melted a couple tabs off, ran out of money for a rebuild, and now it the cage sits in a field rusting.

It was too little too late. It was like a 12 ounce ABC or something. The important thing is, I still have the 1835 core, and all the money I put into that. AND nobody got hurt, just a couple cactus.

When we were diagnosing the mess some days later, we figured it was the manual fuel switch between tanks that sprung a leak, dropped my pressure and created an air pocket in the line after I switched the two tanks. The air pocket couldn't get past the second clogged fuel filter witch started spraying gas from the pressure. Fried the damn thing from the exhaust back into the cabin. Shocked And now im still using that 1835 block in my new baby.

sounds to me like you should be upgrading your fire extinguisher for the next time. just like a cage its a safety thing, don't skimp. I have a 3 lb one in my baja. its mounted on the tunnel just in front of the shifter for a quick grab on the way out of the car.
