While looking like a decent starter rail to the untrained eye, not pefect but no oil leaks, nice paint, a decent rail was stripped the good stuff of and slapped togeher with what ever they had. The sellers misrepretation of the 40 hp engine as a 16000 cc engine is just the beginning. The good part is most of the problems are an easy fix but still costly. How many problems can you spot in these pictures.
I'll give you a hint on the first two. Replacing the missing shifter lock out plate made it worse not better.

This on the shifte is in the 3/4 position.

It is not mine but it will come back to life fast. In a few hours it will be functional for normal useage.

Its funny, In most cases it takes just as much effort to do it wrong as it does to do it right. I have seen some scary crap people have done on their VWs and luckily lived to tell about it.

x2 on effort. From the fancy paint job I suspect this was a former low travel Sand Queen with an expensive engine, transaxle and aluminium front end that was stripped of those parts for use with a newer chassis.

I ended up removing the end off the old shift rod and welded it to the end of the early weld in adjuster to convert it for use with a late model shifter coupler.



An hour later it shifts correctly and the reverse lock out works.

yes perri is a very good man he has been helping me alot with this and is very helpful he explains things very well. i am a noob with vw's and he tells me everything i need to know! Thanks for all the help perri

Today I replaced the brake hoses, left front brake line and fixed the solid steel rear brake hoses.
The left front was to long and was rolled around in circles and kinked.

The main rear brake hose was a little short but since it was new I welded a bolt to the frame to secure the tee and rerouted the rear lines for a cleaner look.


Note the nice bow in the bowden tube.

Note the stout 3/32" acc cable

I think this rail had a hydraulic acc and clutch pedals before it got stripped "refurbished" and sold.

Such attrocities! i bought my baja in july and am still finding things that the guy before me screwed up. I mean theres cutting corners, and then theres just not doing it.

Last thing to do was look at the protruding wheel bearing. Two outer races were installed to makeup for the missing washer between the lock nut and bearing. The same thing was on the right side but the bearing cap was still on. Unfortunately it was the drivers bearing cap and the bearing was full of rust. The drivers wheel cylinder was leaking and the right side. The inner bearingas were stuck on by a thick coat of paint on the bearing and seal surface.

A quick trip to Dougs and Bap for the needed parts.

On word of warning the thrust washers sold need to be fitted to the axle. They are a poor unheat treated copy of VW Rabbit washers which also do not fit.


I unhooked the wire from the choke to the oil pressure switch.
It is amazing someone was to lazy to hook up the idle solenoid wire so they disconnected the choke heater so it would stay running.
Hooked up correctly it actually idled.

There at least another 10 hours to go but what would one expect when it got traded for some used tires. Good score Mario.
