Hey guys, Im new to the forum and would like some inexpensive tips for the front suspension. I have a 72 standard beetle with a fiberglass front end. I am just starting to turn it into a baja and have not touched the suspension yet. Tips and suggestions would be appreciated.

Welcome to the site!

You're opening Pandora's box with your question- so be warned! Laughing You're in for a multitude of opinions, probably none of them cheap!

What's your intended use for the car in the long run? If you're going mild, then your current front end (ball joint) should do you fine, maybe with a few tweaks. If you're looking for more strength, travel and lift, then there's only so much that can be done with balljoint.

I'm sure some peeps more knowledgeable than I will chime in shortly. I've never owned a balljoint car, so I know virtually nothing about them.

Post some pics, and keep us posted on your progress!!

Your overall plans and budget will dictate where you go from here. Best to have an idea on those points before jumping into something.

I do not know how to post pics. My budget is pretty low so modifying the stock sounds pretty good. Let me know how to post pics and i would be happy to. They are on my computer and ready. You could look at the pics from my Club website at this link.

Welcome to AZBAJA. Get yourself a copy of Building Bajas and Buggies by Jeff Hibbard. There is a banner ad for it on this forum and from Chirco.com.
Go to class11.org search for Uncle ed his build has many of the new ideas for stock travel vehicles since Jeff last made updates.

I second perrib's suggestion. Jeff Hibbard's Baja Bugs and Buggies got me on my way. The guys on this forumn got me the rest of the way or when I stumbled on some thing. I'm running mostly stock suspension as I don't have many off road places to go here on the east coast. I still plan to go a little more radical but it's fine for what romping I do so far.
I would definately beef up the stock suspension per the book. I added gussets, welded the seam and also welded in adjusters to my bj front end. The rear, I replaced the stock spring plates with adjustable plates which are a little thicker than stock. Plus both front and rear adjusters allow me to stiffen/raise them if need be. While your at it, install urethane bushings in place of the stock rubber. It lasts a lot longer and can take a little more punishment. This is covered pretty well in the book so that's a good start.
As far as posting pic's just get a free photo hosting site like photobucket or flickr, upload your pic's there and link them here. Pretty easy.

new to site and want to build a desert romper.. nothing to race unless its a buddy down the trails. have a mid engine sandrail with a 1776, just got a 70 baja. some1 started a project and gave up,the guy didn't know whay he was doing I think. but in the long run I would like something that has good travel and not too heavy. would like to run a 1776 or maybe 1835 dual port with single carb. or a chevy 4.3. the sus. is stock for now but want to trick it out in the long run. was thinking like 3x5 or 3x7 arms in back with 4.5 longer arms up front, with a 6" over frnt beam. it has a 3 rib bus trans. the cage is "mickey and donald" done, nasty welds and shitty material. want to cage it but don't know if I should buy a class 11 cage and go off of that or do something custom. going to put coilovers in front and hopefully in rear but maybe bypass in rear.
need your help on what to do and if this sounds good!!!!!

It all depends on how much money you want to spend. More suspension is better than more power. As far as a single carb engines under 2.0 liter a 1955 (76x90.5) with a VZ 14 cam and a 3 rib transaxle. Only thing that will stop it is no traction. As for the 4.3 I'm not real big about dragging around a top heavy five hundred pound piece of cast iron and its radiator around the desert. My friend had one in his single seat rail that he raced closed courses with.

thanks for the reply.. I love vw motors but want more power.. and I dont want it at the expense of thin cyclinders and hot motor.. 4.3 is heavy and a radiator to lug around are fine with me if i can punch it all day,and not worry about overheating an air cooled motor. was thinking maybe a b2200 toyota motor, with some nice exhaust and better injectors. what you think? I've had people tell me a pinto motor. far as money goes not too worried I know i'm neve gonna get rid of it.Plus it cost to be the boss!! and I wanna be that guy.. haahha. not to get cocky..but everything we do we do right no shortcuts and no cheap buy-outs... plus I know the owner of moore parts in cali. and a couple of workers at buckshot sandrails..

My VW engines do not run hot and I don't baby them. Watch some of my vids. I'm out in the desert for hours every month of the year. At some point all more power and weight does is bend or break parts. I'm always looking at power to weight. For water cooled I'd go WRX Subaru with FI and a built 5 or 6 rib T-2 transaxle. Thes are just my opinions. Its your cash so I think you should build what makes you happy. My friend was happy with his 4.3.

right on i plan on building it strong and prob. gonna go with 4.3. thanks for the thoughts and opinions.. what kind of cage would you recommend? or would you build it yourself. I can build roll cages for dragsters and funny cars but never for a baja. would like to know where to tie into the pan. was planning on a full cage front to back. I've been told to tie into rear torsion housing the go from there, push the rear torsion back 2 feet and leave the front the same as stock.far as tubing the whole car is it better to put the bottom rail under the pan and secure it to pan or go on top of the floor pan and then threw fire wall(trunk)? talk to ya after work..

If you push the torsion housing back 2 feet, the body would look quite odd.

IMO, I would run the longitube tube from the frt of the torsion housing, along the contours of the pan through the frt firewall and out to the new extended beam location. Then build up from there. Look at some class 5/1600 and 11 cars and compare their cages. You will also need to make custom rear forks to mount the upcoming heft in the rear. BTW, your cage will be the support for your suspension, powertrain, steering etc. Since you are going heavier, you will need a well thought out thicker cage.

Hense Perri's statement about speed/weight/complexity...

thank you much!! I'm just a green horn looking for advice and opinions on how and what to do. I think I have a good idea on how I want the cage to be in the front half of the car. Now I just need to figure out exactly what motor I'm goona run after sus. is done so I can figure the back half of the cage out. if that makes any since to you guys..
