When I got my Baja there was slop in the steering wheel to steering shaft connection.
Grant steering wheel with their adapter. I figured the PO had screwed up and put the wrong adapter on. I bought a new adapter kit and have the same problem. Adapter will go onto the splined end of the shaft but is not a tight fit.
Called Grant for assistance and talked to Joey in Tech. We double checked both adapter part #'s and both are correct for my 1972 type1.
He said there was 3 generations of VW Bug shafts.

First: Early splined with no taper and the largest diameter which my adapters would not go on.

Second: What my 1972 should have. Splined with no taper Middle of the road in diameter.

Third: Beginning around 1973 a splined WITH taper that my adapter would just spin on with no engagement of splines.

He also said there was an odd shaft used in the KG that was just slightly smaller than the 2nd generation shaft that my adapters would go on but be sloppy. His feeling is my shaft was changed at sometime to one of these. ( They never made adapters for the KG shaft because of little demand )
Anyone had any similar experiences putting an aftermarket steering wheel in your cars?
My shaft sure looks original! I have been doing a lot of work on this car and have found nothing but original equipment.
I am hoping I can find a simple fix for this. I really would like to get this together and not be searching fr a new steering shaft.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Not sure if you are serious and I am not familiar with mighty putty.
However, if it sets up hard I am guessing that I would have trouble getting the steering wheel off if I had to. If it remains soft the steering wheel could still work on the splined shaft. Joey at Grant warned me that the die cast adapter would eventually fail if allowed to work on the spline. Mating surface to the shaft would strip out.
I am considering wrapping the spline with some thin metal shim stock if I can find some. I am not sure where to look for it. Preferably brass. It wouldn't take much.
I am trying to research what year range of shaft I can use.
Thanks for the reply

Just replace the steering shaft if there is any doubt. I knew about the 3 generations of shafts in a bug, but I never knew there was an oddball in a ghi, But I have only owned 2 ghias and God knows how many beetles, maybe 250 or so in the last 20 years. Shocked

You have to use mighty Putty 3 or 3 HD and is is only good if you never turn the steering. Just find a shaft to fit the adapter.

Got Me!! Embarassed
Guess I am really out of touch. Never heard of the stuff. Then again I don't watch much TV. I figured it was like JB Weld or something. Laughing
