Welcome to the site. And congratulations on yo baja. I have a 90 2wd Chevy full size pickup with a rebuilt 4.3 motor and a blown trans that I would love to trade for a decent baja if I could find one.

Thanks. Why not save the motor and strip out anything else that might be useful? Brain, wiring harness, fuel lines, etc. Then find yourself a baja w/out an engine, stuff the 4.3 in the baja, and go see if you can scare yourself!

200 lbs is not heavy. I'm leaning towards the in car shelf since the stuff is out of sight and protected from the elements. Leave the back seat take it and the front seat out out when you want to haul your stuff. A simple electrical conduit frame and some 3/8 plywood will work for an in car shelf.

I don't know... I had between 2-300 lbs on the roof rack of my Durango a couple days ago and it was DEFINITELY there! As much as that thing was leaning just driving around town (20 mph or less) I don't think I want to try that with the bug suspension. Even after I get the rack mounted on the baja I plan on limiting the load up there to 100 lbs. or less. I'd rather be safe than p*** myself thinking I was doing a wheelie the wrong way! haha!

I believe the engine would be too big to put in a baja (V6). Also it sinks on gas mileage Sad

I saw one in a single seat rail it was very wheelie prone due the the weight distribution. Kennedy will make you an adapter but the 200 mm clucth maybe come the fuse.

I'm not sure how much of a VW purist you might be but...I have a friend whose father had a Manx buggy w/ a transaxle and engine from a Corvair grafted onto a VW tube. Surely that trans/clutch could handle the torque from a 4.3 Chev?? It was another wheelie monster though. At 15 or 16yrs. old I could lift the front end off the ground by myself! Or....you could look into putting all that stuff into a Jeep, or maybe a Samurai?

You can use a Kennedy stage three pressure plate and puck style disc but then the transaxle becomes the fuse. As long as you don't drag race or wheel hop in reverse a transaxle lasts a long time. It is cheaper and easier to use the clutch disc as the fuse. The engine is free and a Kennedy adaper kit is only around $600. You have some extra cost for plumbing the cooling system but to build a VW engine with that much power you need ten times as much cash.

Thanks Fellas,

Although it may be fun, it also stinks on gas mileage. For me it is a no go. Are any of you interested in buying it?

It might be better than you think work a VW engine hard in sand and the mileage gets in the low teens. You will get 24-25 mpg on the highway.

We are talking about my 4.3L V6 Chevy, right? The best I got in my truck was 19 Hwy, 15 city with 30" x 9.50" x 15" installed. I never saw 24 - 25 mpg highway even with the stock smaller tires. Confused

The whole truck could be shipped out there for under $1,500.

My thought would be that the baja is MUCH lighter than the truck and wouldn't take as much gas to get it going or keep it going. At least that is my guess as to why he guessed your MPG would be much higher than it was in the truck. Either way, my old VW powered rail didn't get even the 19mpg you mentioned when I was in the sand. And that was with a mild 1835.

I was refering to a VW engine. My 1600 got 25 on they highway the one time I checked it driving to Flagstaff and back. My 2180 gets between 10 and 24 mpg.

We had a car shipped from Az to Delaware last year for $900.00. Cheaper than driving it.

Thanks Perrib. I'm less distance away then Delaware. If I can get my truck and engine sold I may have a bug shipped out to me.
