It looks not to wild of a road only a small bump and he crashes and rolls

I plan on building a baja soon and I can see my driving roads like this .
What went wrong?
I dont want this to happen to me.

Shocks were wrong or broken. The rear compresed and all that energy needs to release. (The Supension on your car is a Big spring, you squize the spring and it spring out again) The shocks control that energy and dispate it as heat. Kind of like the way the brakes work on your car.

It's 4 am so spelling mistakes all over the place...

Just because it is sand does not mean it is not rough. After he crested the first hill there was another one in the valley between the next one. There seemed to be a rock in there that shifted the Baja left to right violently. Don't drive that fast, prerun your trails. There is a lot to be said for knowing when to slow down. He was racing wherer every fraction of a second counts.

I've looked at the video, too. It looks to me like the rear was over-sprung and/or under-shocked. This could have been due to a failure as Az said. This also could have been just the way that car is set up. This is a very common condition for the rear axle. Also, it looks like when he landed, he landed just at the right (wrong) spot, causing excessive extension after compression (the trampaleen [sp?] effect), while a slight over-correction of steering may have caused the back end to kick out of control.

It's easy to do.

I watched this footage over and over to try and learn from it myself. I'm hoping it never happens to ole '57. That would be a serious bummer.

wow, neither his hood nor his roof got damaged......i wouldnt say the same about his suspension, engine, rims, steering, and his pride....

This is a situation which happens when you use more suspension than you have on the car. It does appear the rear shocks may not have been working right. But regardless of that, he was going too fast for the situation. This happens fairly often in 5-1600 race Bajas. But need not happen in cars not being raced.

I have been involved in offroad racing since the early 70s and have won a championship in my own offroad car. I have never rolled a car offroad, but have rolled my Bug on the pavement...going too fast for the situation.

This sort of thing is why safety is an important consideration in building and operating a Baja Bug or any other offroad recreation vehicle. Put a decent roll cage in it and good seat belts to protect yourself and anyone with you. If you're careful and good, it may never happen to you. But it's smart to be prepared for it.
