Hey guys. I helped my father bring home his newest toy a 1971 VW Beetle. These things are wicked cool. I am looking into building a baja, but I am not sure what year would be the best or easiest platform to start with. I am aware that there are suspension changes and lug pattern changes in certain years. Any information or personal opinions would be great. Thanks Smile

Welcome to the site!! What year to buy/start with depends on what you find. Most like the 69 and up to get IRS rear, then change the frt to link pin if desired.

Are there smog laws where you live? That is a big thing for us 66 and older are smog exempt here.

Whatever year you get (other than a super beetle) can be modified for suspension, lug pattern you desire.

Cool well I'm looking around cruising Craigslist and what not. I see that widening the front beam and getting longer "spindle arms"? is a popular modification to the front, and the rear longer trailing arms? Brakes seem to be another hot thing to swap. im gathering that the VW are Drum brakes. No anything over 25 years old does not have to pass emissions here.

AWESOME! That is even better than our pre-66 law.
