Well, first found you guys doing a google search. my first car was a '66 Beetle. Lots of fun with that little car. Anyway, currently I don't have a bug, but i am looking to get one soon, at least when i get back to the states, currently overseas right now. For now I'm just looking for any tips and ideas for building a baja. mine won't be seeing a whole lot of sand though. mostly wooded trails and the like.

And yes, i've ordered the book, should be here in a few days in fact Very Happy

Welcome to AZBAJA. I would use a 3 rib T-2 transaxle to get the gearing lower. Weld the frame horns, frame head and front beam seams. Make sure the skid plate is strong and away from the engine. 30x10.50 mud terrains all the way around will give you decent floatation in mud. A 3500 # UTV winch would be a good addition. Reinforce the tie rods and steering box. Check out oktr6er videos on You Tube to see just how little you need for the woods.

Welcome Very Happy Check out Samba and Craig's List for a bug. I think there is a guy in Marysville, TN and also some folks in SC that look as though they have some in decent shape.
