With 4 " longer front and 3"x5" rear arms you can fly through almost anything. See my Crown King and Boulder Mountain videos on AZBAJA.com. . I only have 1" longer front and 3" longer rears but the rail is lighter than a Baja. Look at these to get an idea how rough the terrain is on the Crown king Rd..

You made the right choice building the suspension first. Next for a 1600 a VW 3 rib transaxle like the one Bugzyla is selling is the next step. It restores the power the engine lost turning larger heavier tires.

Suspension seats and 5 point harness are also a first on the to do list.

Hey Perrib,

By a longer front, do you mean wider? Or have you extended the wheel base between the front and back of the car?

I meant longer arms for more travel. But then there are also wider beams and lengthening the wheel base. Get yourself a copy of Building Bajas and Buggies. It will be your best tool.

Wheelbase and wheel travel are your friends when going fast in the desert.

As far as shocks/mounts etc. The longer the stroke on the shock the more travel it can support. The longer the stroke, the longer the shock, the higher the upper mounts have to be.

I have 10" stroke fronts with custom mounts on my 6" longer beam, with 2 1/4" longer, 1" wider (2 1/2 x 1) trailing arms that is pushed forward ~5".

The rear is 3" longer and 3" wider (3x3) trailing arms and 14" stroke shocks with the upper mount built into the cage.

I have FOA rear shocks and Sway a way front coil overs.

Some people do fine with modified stock. ie..better shocks on stock size stuff. Then upgrade as time goes on.

Others go much bigger than mine...10" wider beam, 4x1.5 frt arms pushed forward ~8"; 5x5's in the rear etc.

A good build thread is on Chirco's site. Good size, not a ton of money.

i have a 70 also, gonna switch to king pin or link pin front end. with a 6" over beam, and longer arms. I'm gonna put 3x5 rear arms in back. what kind of cage do you have "dont" or is it custom.? I can make cage but was told easier to but a class 11 cage and build off of from there.I was told it is strong enough to tube the front from the cage and strong enough to mount the rear shocks? is it better to run coilovers all the way around? or is it alright to run coilovers in front and bypass's in rear with torsions? I want to be able to hammer threw what ever I want to.should I leave the torsions in the sus. front and rear or remove and run coilovers to hold the car up and bypass's for the travel? thanks and if I have asked something ass backward please be nice.. or let me know I'm asking the wrong ?'s

My cage started as an empi 6 pt, then got heavily modified by Bugzylla Fabrication.
