I found this site by doing a google search for Volkswagen Baja. I live in Camp Verde at a school in Lake Montezuma. I have five kids and am building this project with my 10 year old son. It will be his run-around car when he get old enough to drive.
I just picked up this little guy. I called my wife and she said "just do whatever you want." When I came home and asked for the checkbook I found out that "just do whatever you want" does not mean the same thing to her as it does to me. I told her that I already commited to buying this buggy so she reluctantly let me.

I thought I had one bad mother buggy that with a little paint and rims/tires but after viewing pics and messages on this board I can see that I have gotten myself into something a whole lot deeper than what I imagined when I saw this in the weeds by the side of the road.
I only talked to the wife of the guy who owned this. I hope he was aware that she sold it. She said that it has a bus transaxle and I noticed that it had disk brakes on the front. The interior is great except for a lot of dog hair

I will probably be asking a lot of questions because I have no experience with mechanics.

I'm actually very fortunate. My wife might complain but she lets me get away with a lot of crap.
I need to start looking for these items. New window seals and basically whatever it takes the windows to roll up normally including the handles, exhaust, carb, rims/tires, guard for the front cage for the back and probably a bunch of other stuff. Do you recommend online or are there some good places to buy (preferalby north phoenix or above)?
Thanks.

azranger,

Welcome to AzBaja! You will be able to find good used parts here at the "I have something to sell!" thread. BugZila has parts for sale and so do I along with many others. We are also willing to help in any way we can. Advise? Questions? Just ask!

My son-in-law recently got me into vw bajas and now I have the "Bug" bug bad! I know about 327 Chevy's, the 389 Pontiac engine in the 1964 GTO, but vw air cooled engines are new to me and this site and these guys have helped me a lot with the questions and answers found here.

Good luck with your baja. My family and I may have to make a trip up to check out your bug project!

Jake

according to your 2 pics, the wheels look fine, maybe some new tires for it.

whats wrong with the :
exhaust?
carb?

are you askin about a skid pan for the front and rear?
you could put an aluminum plate in the front if you desire. there should be a steel or aluminum plate in the rear UNDER the trans and motor. got one???

either fab it or look here: www.chircoestore.com/c...571e4e2707

go through anr check the wheel bearings, repackem with the good grease (marine if your drive a lot in the rain or puddles). grease the whole front end, e brake cable (if it has a zurk). check the drive shaft boots (cv's) for leaks, cracks, tears.

change all of the fuel lines if its been sittin for a while (pull the fuel tank to get the rest of the lines - 4 bolts or so) and change the fuel filter.

will it start at all?

oh yea, get these books:

How To Keep Your Type 1 Alive, For The Complete Idiot

Baja bugs and buggies

those are a good start.

Bajafun - that is great info. I will do all of those things. I am going to get new tires. What to you suggest for an All Terrain.
It runs but cuts out big time in first gear when you take off.
The exhaust is all rusted and has been welded and rewelded a thousand times. Were going to tinker with the carb and see if we can get it going.
Thanks,
DP

run lt at's in the rear. 235's to 31" will work.

fronts anywhere from stock 156/15 to 215/ 15 or taller if ya have the room to steer and such.

sounds like an ignition/ timing problem if its cuttin out. start with the fuel sytem as suggested. change the plugs (bosch or what ever the high performance ones are from chirco). change the wires, points and condensor. you may want to just buy the petronix electronic ignition pack for it. is it a stock vacuum advance dist or is it a 009? (no vac advance).

have your buddy get his good timin light (digital). set it to 7.5* btdc.

btw...what kinda carb? (look on the left side - i do believe- on the throat and it should say somethin like 32pict3 or so.)

Mine is a 30 Pict3.

This little pipe that is right above the "k" on broke was broken on both sides. It allowed the carb to move back and forth. We welded both of them and it is running alot better. It has been welded many times before so I think I need to do something different.
I ordered some Cooper Discoverer tires

from a buddy of mine for the back today.

$150? or you can go economy and drop $60 or $80 bucks on a raw one and paint it flat black BBQ paint or ACE sells there own brand of bbq paint that comes in a aluminum finish and is good to 1200 degrees. Just used both on mine and looks sweet.

I just bought a tri mill at Bap, raw and spent $80 after taxes and a couple of cans of paint at like $3 or $5 a piece. The chrome ones at Bap are $120 plus tax.
