Greetings All!,

FIrst of all what a great forum! I have been reading reading reading and so much info!

I would lke to make a baja that I can tow with my motorhome around here in Southern Oregon.

Here is my outline and looking for what you would consider a "good build" for this application, and yes I have the Baja bible and a few other books I have read. But I'm hoping you guys will help with my new hobby.

First of all lots of logging roads to zip around on to see the sites, but needs to be street legal. We have a few sand dune areas that can be played here in eastern oregon and the beach. Call in mild play (car might survive the jump but me....?)but want to not get stuck. I would like to drive around sometimes as a daily, but like a bit of zip ( hmm 1915?) or course love the disc brakes all around. Might need a wee bit of heat here as it does snow. Don't care for a back seat, so what to put thier (besides a mid engine Very Happy ) Must be VW powered.
Budget is not cheap but not unlimted either. I have access to a machine shop and an guy who knows how to weld. (They both owe me)

Currently in just the reading stage but looking for the VW to start on!

Thanks again in advance for all input and advise.

DRIVE HARD!

First of all: Welcome to the disease.

You can build a fairly reliable and cool baja for around $2500 if you have some patience and knowledge. You can build a helluva baja for about $25,000. Pick a budget. Know you're going to double it going into it. Have fun.

The first bit of advice I can give you: Buy a cheap welder and learn to weld. You'll find the quality of your build will be much better in the long run, and it opens up endless possibilities for you.

When you get going on the project, post up your questions. We're here to help.

I'd start cheap. I have a $2500 Baja that I drive daily and tow out to the fun spots. I'm building a bigger, better one but that's more for the experience than the need. My DD is plenty for fun trail riding. Start small and see where it takes you.

Kyle

I would go with a nice 1835 DP, 31x10.5 tires out back, 29" to 31" tall tires on the front, Scat shifter, A nice set of Shocks front and rear and disc brakes.

1835DP has nice power and seems to be easy to get parts for
31x10.5 tires are not to big to lug the motor or too small to not get traction
Scat Shifter, a sloppy bad shifter on a great transaxles can just remove the fun of the car, but a good shifter will evan make a old transaxle feel like new. (It's a feel good thing, trust me Smile
Shocks are the key to a nice ride and a great aoffroad car.
Disc brakes, You like to stop and the brakes are self adjusting. the drums are not. Also a great feel good when you push the brakes.

and welcome to the site.

Welcome to the site. There is a step by step reasonable Baja build on Chirco's site. www.chircoestore.com/c...nte4fgc0p6

If I were you, I would start with a 69 or newer; cut and turned ball joint beam with new ball joints, boxed stock rear trailing arms, bilstein shocks, take care of maint/safety items and go have fun. And follow AZBaja's shifter/tire advise.

For the back seat area, I think nuke worker and/or 2 grtdogs have enclosures built for storage.

Well thanks for the infomation so far! Love it! As for reading the book of baja by Hubbard i rather have up to date and dirt proven stuff as you guys do.

okay why the 1832 vs.the 1915 .. been of the school more CC more HP?

Next question is I know where a 73 super beetle is minus the motor for 50 bucks. can this be build to my purpose? I see some of you guy have em as super beetles.. but then I read how bad they are. Pro and cons overall?

And I have looked at almost every link here and see all the info and it is overwhelming hince I am asking for the info that leads to the best of the stuff and not the learning curve of what works and what don't. Call me lazy...

Again thanks to all who can type!

Super beetles can be used for very mild dirt trails, but the struts/sheet metal do not stand up to repeated beatings. The rear suspension is the IRS you want.

If you want, you can get that car, play with it and plan to upgrade in the future. To change over to a beam, you will have to modify the front, but it can be done. One other thing to note...the fiberglass front ends for supers are more expensive than standards.

Picking a budget is very important. Hibbards book is less dated than you think. If your machinist is good with cases build a 82x94 couple it with a Engle 110 cam, good heads, single carb and a 3 rib bus transaxle you'll have enough bottom end grunt to go anywhere. Suspension as much as you can afford. Seating: Proseatz of course.
