I have a lead on a 71 Squareback Automatic and I'm seriously considering getting it. The price can't be beat (free). Only problem is It needs a hood and left fender, as well as an engine. My biggest concern is the engine. Does anyone know of a good place to pick up a type 3 pancake engine around here? Any leads on body parts would be great too.

I'm thinkin' Ecotec/automatic/squareback- be a trendsetter!

THAT would be cool.

Thinking about doing this:

I don't know where to get an engine around there, but there are many places in SoCal. I'd personally build it myself.

I'd be grabbing a free squareback if I knew about one in my neck of the woods. They make FANTASTIC off road cars with very little money spent, and just a bit or wrench turning. Mine outperforms all but the most modified rigs in our group, and it's all stock suspension and engine.

Since I have the rail, and my Tacoma PreRunner, I think I will keep this one a fairly stock commuter car. That baja'd squareback does look pretty menacing though. I'd love to build the engine myself, but it will be a pain finding all the cooling stuff and FI stuff for the pancake engine. It would be nice to be able to just find a donor engine somewhere.

Are you talking Ecotec as in the Chevy 4cyl? Interesting. I do have a ford Zetec motor sitting in my garage waiting to be put into something. Seems like it would be too long to mount to the VW Transaxle and still fit in a Squareback. May if there is away to make the Ford or Chevy transverse mounted transaxle mate with the VW IRS rear. Would also have to mount a radiator somewhere too. Hmmmm, you got me thinking.

Also I'd be able to hook up an A/C in the car pretty easily. Hmmmmm.

Well I got the Squareback in the garage now and made some measurements. It looks like a Ford Zetec will fit back there. I also found a company called Bostig that specializes in putting Zetecs into Vanagons. So I may soon have the first ever Zetec powered automatic Squareback. Should be interesting.

I'm leaning more toward rat rod for this beast. I have enough off road toys for now I need something a bit more street friendly.
