Since so much of Arizona's timber country is National Forest, not being street legal hinders you a LOT. Spark arrester, driver's license, tags and insurance are all requirements to drive on forest roads in any National Forest.

Try doing a search for Arizona OHV areas and see what you come up with there. There are several state-developed areas scattered all over AZ that don't require you to be street legal, but of course the "copper" sticker is now required at those.

I'd say suck it up and make the thing street legal if possible. That'll open MANY doors to places to ride for you.

There's a place called Alto Pit up here in Prescott, it says on the USFS website that full size 4WD's and vehicles over 50 in. are not allowed. Haven't been there in a long time, but I know a lot of people who've driven trucks, jeeps, samurais, etc... out there and have not been hassled. Might be worth checkin out, it's a little cooler here than in Surprise.

az350x, got a question about forest roads, don't know if you will know. If you ride (dirt bike or quad) on a trail (not a road) designated for quads, dirt bikes, hiking, mt. biking, etc... does the vehicle have to be tagged and insured? I don't think so, but not sure. Thanks for any help...

In Utah you can't ride anywhere other than private property (with permission!) without either street registration or OHV registration and insurance either way.

I know some great spots to go in Arizona 16, 12, 8, and 6 years ago. It's no longer offroad as it street driven.

New homes took up all the local great spots...

The good spots in suprise are now covered with homes...

You need insurance and tags. The fine for no plate is $450.00. No insurance also $450. The cheap way to go is register it as "driven at least 51% off road". $25 for the OHV tag, $5 for the plate and insurance is usually cheaper if you alreay have one car insured. I have spent a couple of weeks in the Pinetop/ Lake Side area the last two years. Hundreds of miles of trails. (See my video posts here and on Youtube (VW2180).)
