Has anyone looked at www.aircooled.net tech pages? What do you think about the information found there? Is it right on or no?

Thanks 57 baja,

Most of it seems to talk about hiway use engines. At least what they sell I believe. Are they good folks to buy engines from?

I'm not sure about buying engines, but they have quite a reputation for parts like carbs and SVDA's, etc. I would assume the engines are great, too. I'm just a fan of building engines myself.

Thanks again. When you build engines do you use the case that came with the car you bought or start with a new one? Aluminum or magnesium?

It would depend on your budget and use. If you have an unlimited budget, you would use ALL new parts. There are compromises if you're not made of cash.

Like was said, they are a great shop. I run one of their SVDA's on my DD 1600 and love it. Having said that, Air Cooled Engineering (Art Thraen) is right next door to them and is the SHIT when it comes to building performance engines. He'll be setting up my 1915.

Those shops are local to me and both are extremely clean and professional. I wouldn't hesitate to buy from either. If you're thinking about not buying local to you, it'd cost the same to have an engine shipped from either.

Kyle

It depends on the budget. What do you have to work with?

You should be able to build a terrific engine for that. Are you starting from scratch, or do you have all the external tins, alternator, pump, carbs, etc? Are YOU going to build it, or are you going to have it done for you?

I have none of the above. I have rebuilt other engines, but have never worked on any VWs. Are they easy to build? Is it smart to rebuild an old engine, ie 1600, or would it be wise to start from scratch? I would like to get away with spending less money if possible. I also don't know what components work best together, ie crank, cam, heads, and carb. can you help with that? If it doesn't cost to much, I may just have someone build it for me.

The lease expensive way is to keep an eye open for a complete 1600 DP. That way you can have the case inspected, machined etc cheaper than a new one; re-use the shroud, tins etc.

Thanks for the advise DONT. I'll have to keep my eyes open for a good engine, and then have it bored out and add the crank, cam, heads, carb/carbs, ect. What about completed long blocks. Are they a good or bad idea?
