Greetings from Portland, OR!

I've just picked up a Baja and figure I need the combined knowledge of some experienced people. Yes, I know how to use the search button!

Here's the project, cell phone pics for now:

Here's me being a miscreant:

And here's my watercooled toy (I picked up the Baja so I wouldnt be so tempted to modify it!) :

It's a 1970, with a mostly stock 1600cc engine. So far I've only pulled out the rear seat, tuned the carb, and welded on a better mounting solution for the fuel tank...it was held on with sheet metal screws and fell off during some off road driving! Shocked

It shifts great and runs pretty good, except for at full throttle it bogs down pretty bad. I'm gonna be rebuilding the carb, slapping in a new fuel/air filter, putting in new tie rods, and fixing a shoddily wired headlight with in the next month.

By July I hope to have How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive fully read, so I can pull the body off, get to stopping the rust in its tracks, paint, redo the roll cage, put in some kind of heavier duty wiring, and fix the speedo over the summer.

Figure it's a good idea to have a solid base that I understand in and out before I start going crazy trying to upgrade suspension, steering, brakes and motor.

Haha, thanks, its a little outlandish but it turns heads, so thats fun. There's not too many Bajas running around Portland so it gets a lot of attention.

I fixed the wiring on the headlight today. I tested my wiring handiwork in the field after I finished it and shook the wiring for the overhead lights apart. Gah.

I'd like to be able to move quickly over rough terrain without shaking everything apart.

There's a lot I'd like to do, but it's not in my budget to do it all at once. I'm debating about updating pieces of it while driving it, or just parking it and doing it gradually. Seems like the latter would allow me to do more things with it and do them right.

Any advice? I need to figure out how to keep the motor alive while I'm working on it, I don't want it to seize up.

to keep your motor alive, drain the oil, cover all your intake and exhaust ports and holes in general, than store it in as dry of place ya can find. turn it over very slowly every few months with a wrench on the pulley and you should be fine, alsways worked for me with dirtbike motors and such and no damage to the internals...as long as you go super slow..
