Are rebuilt cases any good or am I just asking for issues? I've been looking around for decent used ones to use, but even ones needing work are going for $200. I saw an add on Samba for 300, for rebuilt? Not sure about them though. Samba does have a few cheaper, but needing work, High shipping, or nobody replies back to your questions. If anybody has a lead on a place for good usable cases for a reasonable price please let me know. I'm looking for 2 now. One standard, and one for a 1776. I'm in Havasu and there isn't anywhere close by that has anything usable. Not looking for High po, Just street! Anybody?

Unless you know the history behind the case it is usually better to cry once and start with a new case. I have used a case where we had to weld up the thrust and rear main Then cut it to maximum line bore. Even being a 1776 and the crank cut 2end undersize it made weekly trips from Phoenix to Las Vegas for 4 years and 90,000 miles later it is still working fine. Other unknown cases have failed in less than a thousand miles and some never made it at all. If you have more time than money make sure to get one from a supplier who will replace the case if it is not servicable. Try Kenny at European Automotive in Phoenix or Brothers Machine in Ca.Once you figure in the cost of shipping and unusable new parts ie bearings gaskets oil etc it will cost more money than you saved. If it was a bad case before maching it is still a bad case just pretty looking.

Kenny's were the ones I was wondering about. He's selling his for $300. He's willing to deal on more than one which is nice but I just wasn't sure if it was worth the risk. Another couple hundred, can purchase new. Thanks for the input.

I only use Kenny @ European Machine for my machine work. I have done countless motors and never found one flaw in his work. I worked as a machinist for 8 years, and I am very picky about machine work.

That why I picked him. He is not going to machine a questionable one. I have only had one case fool me. It was in near new condition but had a tiny crack possibley from an accident or mishandling in the salvage yard that seeped oil by the oil cooler. Welding a piece of mag over the crack solved that.
Buying one from the internet is a bigger problem. People have brought me machined cases that had obvious cetner gap.

I agree with perri, if you dont know the history make sure you buy one from a reputable source.

That's what makes me so nervous about buying over the net. You spend 200 bucks and get a hunk of unusable metal. I'd rather buy something ready to go for a little more.

Kenny has them half price of what it takes to buy a new "race" aluminium case or new case that has been bored for 90.5s and drilled and tapped for full flow. Even a new case needs to be inspected carefully to insure it has no defects. Most do not but I still like to remove galley plugs to see what is inside. The last Autolina "race" case I used needed tho have the oil pump holes aligned to the pump and the case clearanced for the distributor guides. With both used and new cases you have to make sure the oil pressure relief valves work properly. You have to measure case deck as even on a new case it is off and you have to set piston deck hieght and pushrod length for each side unless you machine the case to compensate.
