Hey guys,

first post, I've been a member for a few days, been looking around and decided to post my first post.

I'm big into working on cars, I have a 1969 El Camino and a 1989 Ford Bronco, both of which I'm in the process of rebuilding/customizing.

Big problem though is the cost!
Big problem two is the cost of gas and their gas mileage! LOL

soo, that's why I'm here. I've always wanted a baja bug, and after doing considerable research, I'm ready to make a purchase hopefully at the end of the summer.

my plan is to either make a happy daily-driverable baja that has no roof and awesome suspension (baja race caliber) or just go ahead and make a happy daily-driverable 5/1600...

mainly it's the roof that's messing me up, lol... I like the idea of a chopped top. Wink

anyways, looking forward to meeting everyone and hopefully seeing you out on the trails!

Welcome to the forum, It is really up to you on which way to go. If you enjoy fabrication and rebuilding etc go the cheap route in which by the time you are done you might spend well over 2-3K+. I have learned the more you start with the easier time you have down the road. I would at a min make sure whatever you get it meet a min criteria for you plans. IE; Good rust free body good pans Motor trans etc think about how much work and or $ you are willing to put towards this and go from there.

its always cheaper to get something already built and change what you dont like, than to build from scratch.

i agree. buy one finished. if your interested in buying a good 5/1600 car FAB Inc. is selling turn key cars for good prices. check out the visual stimulation thread in the general discussion forum for pics of the work.

give James a call at 480-219-2584 if you are interested. we are in the process of building a couple cars for the snowflake race but after our cars are built we are going to be building cars for sale.

i would say that it would be a good idea to call him. he does amazing work and will give you a killer deal.

Welcome Aboard!

i'm Preston, your Vice President and i'll be taking care of you this evening Laughing

In all seriousness though, you never know what you're getting into 'till you've bought the car and torn it apart so you could be getting a $500 chunk of gold or a $2000 hunk of garbage, you never know!

one direction i will point you in though is Bugzyla for parts, service and even whole bajas, which are quality vehicles you can be sure of that, then there is Bajawarrior for upholstery and paint, both of these people have worked on my baja "Smokey" Bugzyla did the mechanical work, and Bajawarrior did the paint and front end, i'm going to have my interior done by them as well in the near future.

we really do treat eachother like a big family here so don't be afraid to ask any questions, as for your poll: i'd probably go with a 2-3k dollar bug from Bugzyla the next time he has one available, in fact there is a roller available right now (if it's not sold yet, don't think it is) that's a very good start on a project baja, already cut and ready to go for $300.

Hope this helps!

Take care murphy_p Cool

thanks for the help guys,

yeah, I was thinking the same route. I like fabricating my own stuff and hate buying off the shelf items, so that's probably the route I'll take with the baja bug as well.

one trick though is that my apartment complex doesn't care what condition the car is in, as long as it looks as if it could run, and has tags... so that's the only stickler.;)

thanks to my other cars and helping friends with theirs I have a pretty good eye for spotting a quality car, regardless of price, so here's hoping I find one this time!

thanks again for the help

Pat
