The body and the pan are both different due mainly to the McPherson strut front suspension on the Supers. If you've got fab skills, no worries- chop the front end off and put a beam on it and a one-piece fiberglass front end. If you're building a very mild baja for not-too-crazy use, then you can use the Super as-is, but the adaptability of the front suspension (ie more lift or more travel) is virtually nonexistent. Pretty much the only thing you can do with them is buy higher performance struts, but that's pricey too.

There you have it- there's a TON of info of this sort around on the www.

if you can get it for free thn take it and with the money you would of spent of buying one you can put to changing the front end over. struts will not work for baja. you gotta put a front beam on the car for it to be worth your time. if you are planning to put a roll cage in the car thn you can just weld the beam in with the cage and dont have to change the head out on the car.

somthing to think about. bugzyla could do it for you and it would be done really well

I think he's in Georgia though. That's gonna be somewhat difficult. Shocked

Since so few Supers are converted to bajas (and because of the limitations), I don't really know if that book gets into them that much. I could be way off though.

I'm not saying it can't be done, just that there's a reason so few people use them for bajas.

Thanks az350x,

I ask because it is so hard to find good bugs here in Ohio, especially Standards.

there really isnt a baja kit for the super. if it were me i would just have someone change out the front head unit and bolt up a beam to it. would save alot of hassle...if you find a super beetle baja kit please post it

I don't know a lot about the Supers, but aren't the upper strut mounts part of the body, NOT the pan? I think if that's the case, that's why you have to cut the front of the body off as well as the pan and go with a one-piece fiberglass front end.

I think there's someone on another site who's taking a Super and doing an a-arm conversion to it. I don't think it's a whole lot more work to just go a-arm at this point. Either way, there is definitely some fab work required.

I feel for you guys in the midwest and east with all the rusted-out bugs. I think if it were me, I'd go to the trouble to find a rot-free bug out here and either ship it or come get it. In the long run, I think it'd be worth the hassle/expense. Just my .02.

Tako truckin's car started as a super also. He hung a beam on it. He isn't here a lot, but there is a thread on his car.

The price of free is hard to beat. I'd get it.

Thanks Guys,

I may have to do the fab or just keep waiting for a good Standard. Shipping seems like a good idea, but then I don't know what I'm buying if I don't see it in person.

You could do a google search for bugs for sale near your area.
That should bring up several choices to look through.
If your Grandpa has it, then it should still be there if you don't see anything else you like better. JMO
