Hi, my name is Jake and I'm excited to have a bug once again. Very Happy My first was a '60 bug a few years back, and I had just about every problem under the sun with that one! I had a Ghia too, but never got around to making it drivable so that one doesn't count. Hopefully, my luck has changed with my new purchase. I live in Northern California and am close to many trails, not to mention Nevada dunes an hour or so away, so I can't wait to get her dirty.

Here's some pics of my Baja:

This is what I know: It's a 1964 body (with a sunroof woo hoo) with a converted ball joint front suspension, rear IRS conversion and a 1600 dual port motor. The interior is gutted, which is just fine by me. Things on the fix it list include the drivers side window not rolling down, sloppy shifter, & the engine's flat spot. Things I need to purchase to make it legal in CA is a bumper/rear cage. There's a Bugformance near me, and when I get the chance that's the first thing on my list.

Overall, I think I lucked out on this because my cousin knew the guy for years (delivers mail to him) and was always asking whether he would consider selling it. Well, the guy finally gave in because he needed money fast. I had just sold my 68 Bonneville (cash in hand, literally) when my cousin told me he was selling it. 3 hours later it was mine. I paid $500.00 cash. It never even reached the market! lol

I don't want to spend too much money (thats always the plan, right?), but I do want to customize it by adding some oldschool graphics and paint. My plan is to give it that vintage Tamiya R/C (remote control) car look. Oversized sponsor decals, giant body pins, the works. I'm even going so far as to throw a couple of decals of gauges on the dash. Laughing

Here's a jpeg of a few decals I made so far:

I'm pretty good with Illustrator, so I designed all the vector drawings myself using original Tamiya decals as reference. For those of you who don't know, a vector drawing is a drawing made up entirely of points, lines, curves & poligons (mathematical equations) as opposed to pixels (jpegs). Print shops need files in this format to transfer to vinyl. I just need to pay a print shop to make the decals. By the way, if anyone needs any of my vintage decal vector drawings, or if you want me to recreate a vintage decal that's impossible to find, let me know.

Welcome to the site! Nice little baja you've got- especially for what you paid. SCORE.

Keep us posted on your progress.

I thought I'd been told at one time that '65 was the first year for the hard sunroof? Hmmm....

Thanks! I do believe I scored big time.

Interesting about the year of this bug. I have a lot of people telling me the same thing. However, I did double check the vin # and it seems that the year is valid. Rolling Eyes

Well, I've heard numerous stories of VIN plate swapping happening to VW's over the years. I suppose it's entirely possible that the plate on your body is not the one that was on it originally...
