I have searched and lurked, but I stil have a question about what year bug for a baja. I see alot of pre 66 and then 69-72 given as the best years. My question is what about a 74? Is it the same as a 72? Still IRS/BJ, right? Any reason why I see the 69-72 so much and not suggestions for bajaing 73's and 74's?

Looking at a 74 bug tomorrow for a baja project, just wondering if there was anything about 73's and 74's that would make one want to avoid them. Thanks in advance for your help.

Were they all supers in 74? I thought they still made standard.

From 71 on up VW made both super beetles and standard beetles. In 71 & 72 supers had flat windshields like a standard, but 73& up all supers had a curved windshield and strut front suspension and the standards had a flat windshield and balljoint front suspension. So to answer your Q, 69 standard beetle & up is IRS and would make a good baja.

Yeah... What he said.

One other thing worth mentioning is that the later IRS trannies were stronger than the earlier ones, but had a 3.88 R/P versus a 4.12. If you're not going to switch trannies, the 3.88 ring and pinion will be more of a liability with larger tires than the 4.12. 1973 was when they started putting in the new style cases (AT) with the 3.88.

Sweet thanks. Hit the wrong button last time. Well, trigger pulled, 1974 standard beetle bought. First objective is to make a 35 year old car a daily driver. Might be time to call Chirco (they seem like good people to deal with) and begin with some brake parts and a bypass cut-off valve solenoid, so I can stop and idle. It will be a few months before it can start to resemble something other than a standard beetle (knucklehead snowcat drivers and whitewater raft guides, like myself, are rich in many things, but money is not one of them).

Good to know about the gears as in addition to tire size I have altitude to contend with living at almost 10,000'. Something tells me a bus tranny might be a bit more stout as well as geared lower and hopefully easily swapped?

Low gears might be a good idea where you are. Climbs can be painful with big tires and a stock T1 tranny. I drive mine around 6500' to 9000', and am currently thinking about a bus trans or R&P swap.

I know my '70 with 235's climbs much better than my '75 with 215's once up to freeway speed.

Oh, and snowcats are cool! My buddy has an old Delorean snowcat as he lives in a snowmobile access neighborhood. Top speed, 8.8 mph. Wink

Kyle
