Been wanting to do this for awhile now, but just never got around to it. Fortunately, I have alot left on the project, so will try to get caught up. I had this guy give me a 67 Ghia, that initially I wanted to build into a nice street car, but soon realized it was too far gone. So, while trying to decide what to do with it, it saw a very cool Ghia at Glamis, and decided to build an offroad car instead. So, I set about planning, designing and budgeting, and arrived at the plan that I am currectly working on. The car was wrecked in both the front and back, and had a fiberglass front with it. The driverside pan was completely rusted through, and had to be replaced, so the first order of business was to replace the side, and get the pan in good shape. The following pics show what I started with two years ago. I'll do another post for the progress.

The next couple of pics are of the pan, and the lift. I decided the ghia would need a 3" body lift so I wouldn't have to carve too much out of the fender wells. This would also help tie in the roll cage to more than just the body. So I made a lift out of 1-1/2" x 3" tube steel. Then made the lower front beam support tie in to the body lift.

Now to the stats. I decided to go with a Subaru for power. I know, I'll hear it from the pureists, but it seemed like a good idea. Found a 2.2 subie for $400, and will add a turbo to it in hopes of 200+ hp. 3x3 trailing arms with 12" coilovers in the rear, and a 6" wider beam with 10" coilovers and 4" longer trailing arms in the front. I plan to put the radiator and the fuel tank in the front, and run the waterlines thru the tunnel. The cabin of the car is still straight, so my plan here is to make it as nice as I can and still put in the roll cage. Windows, carpet, backseat, and stereo hopefully will make it fun for the entire family. I found the following pics of a model that best reflect my goal. Pretty cool, too bad its just a model. Mine will be a little different in the back, but the front should be pretty close.

OK This is pretty much where I'm at now. Got the structure for the front all made and got some of the componants painted. Also put the shocks on. This is the part that gave me some renewed inspiration. It just started to look COOL! Let me know what you all think.

VERY NICE!!! One thing you need to do is run a brace between the top of the shock towers or they will bend with the stress of the coilovers. Other than that it kooks great.

I hear you Bugzyla. Saw that on another post that I was looking at. I have to wait until I get the fuel cell in place to make sure that I miss it, or, I may just brace off the bar running right next to it, will see. Thanks

Decided to do an update. Got the couple of missing pieces that I needed to finish mounting the front discs. Got them put on and then had to make sure that the wheel would clear everything. Looks like it will work pretty good. Check it out.

The stance that this will have is going to be really cool. Front tire looks like it will be mostly outside of the fender, but should clear OK. I am planning to run Goodyear Wrangler LT235/75R15 tires on the 7" wheels in the front.
i618.photobucket.com/a...hia014.jpg
This photo is the back area of the inside. I threw this one in to get some ideas of how to seal off the hole for the shock. What I was thinking was maybe using a piece of rubber, inner tube material, cut it about 1" larger than the opening, then fasten it with some adhesive and some rivets around the edge. Then I would cut a hole in it, slightly smaller than the diameter of the shock, and push the shock up through. May have to use some foam to help seal around the coilovers. I know it is virtually impossible to seal them completely without screwing up the shock and spring, but since I want to finish the interior, I do want to do the best possible. Let me know what you think. Thanks.

Got a few small things done on the Ghia tonight. Tried the innertube rubber thing by using an innertube from an old wheel barrow I had, but was not enough material. I still think the idea will work, but will have to get more rubber. Also tacked in some supports for the front end, still need to do some fine tuning on them to get them to the right elevation, but that will be simple. Last night I finished the cage section that will go under the rear tray. Once I get the rubber thing solved, I will get that bolted back in place, and get the rear support underneath and the trailing arms put back on. Getting closer! Hope to have it on the ground by the end of the month. Spoke to BajaWarrior the other day about doing the interior when I get to that stage. Definately going to see if he can do it for me. If all goes well, it will be painted by the end of the year and headed to his place for insides. Will try to get a couple photos posted soon.
Also, sorry about the photo link earlier, bear with me, I'm new to the techie stuff.

I plan on using either the sleeves or legs from a used wetsuit to fill my shock holes- just ANOTHER thing I haven't gotten around to yet.

57baja did that to his, and said the neoprene worked very well, and even did a nice job of helping with noise suppression.

If you watch craigslist, you can find them from time to time for $20 or so- even here in Phoenix.
