Just signed on.
Spent the last two winters in the south west corner of AZ near Ehrenberg.
Have been looking for something light weight to tow behind my small motorhome. Also wanted something that I could use on road as well as explore off road in the desert. I looked at everything from flat fender jeeps to Suzukis. A Baja Bug seemed just about perfect for what I needed. So, I bought a 1972 his winter. Drove it some and towed it home where I can work on it over the summer.
I want to have something that I can drive on road to go to the store etc. and also use on gravel roads and some moderate trails. Nothing real heavy duty.
One goal I have for thr Bug is to drive the Dempster highway during a planned future trip to Alaska.
I have wrenched on various machinery from motorcycle to aircraft. Presently have a restored 1963 Econoline in the garage which I swore would be my last project. Oh well!
Perhaps some on the forum may be familiar with my VW. Sometimes it is a small world.
Found this forum because I found tags on my brake drums that sa Chirco performance and retoration. I did a search and here I am.
I have spent many hours reading various topics on the forum. I am mechanically capable but no experience with VW's. I already have plenty of questions.
Regards to all,
DD
PS How do I add photos?

Welcome to the forum and yet another vehicular addiction!

That's cool that you plan a long road trip. Maintained, little VW's are quite reliable, and spare parts are lightweight!

By the way, don't you know you're supposed to work on it over the winter, not the summer (until you break something at least)? Wink

Kyle

Kyle,
Well my winters are now spent in the desert. If I were at home the garage space is taken up by the 1963 van, BMW R1150GS and a 1988 one ton GMC that I have completely rebuilt. ( Built 350 with some goodies )
First project with the VW is gaining some ground clearance. Tire change will help. Presently has 245/60/15 rear and 195/60/155 on front. I guess one of the previous owners was making it a Saturday night "Cruise in" vehicle. The 8 spoke chrome wheels look nice that they are mounted on. I have not determined the wheel width and back space yet. I am hoping that I can mount 235/75/15 on the rear and perhaps 195/75/15 on the front. That would be a start. It sits awfully low right now. Thinking about a dropped spindle in the front when I replace ball joints and tie rod ends. I will worry about the rear once I have gone through the front.
Thanks everyone for the welcome. I think that the adventure is beginning.
DD

Welcome to AZBAJA. To post pictures go to a web picture hosting site like Photobucket.com , picassa.com. once uploaded to thier site you click on the IMG code and paste it in your post. It is easy or I could not have done it. Post up when you are in Erenberg and maybe some of use can go for a ride out there.

I got some photos on picasa.com
Where do I find this image code to click on? I clcked on the second box from the left in the second row above my text. Is that it? If so, what do I do after I open it?
Thanks,
DD

I'm not sure about picassa.com but for photobucket you put the mouse over the picture you want and the choices drop down. I chose the IMG one.
From the search on picasa.com

1 person says this answers the question:
You upload the image to Picasaweb. After it uploads you can "view online" so you see the image in your web browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc).
In the right column you will see a link that says "Link to this photo".
This will give you two things: the first a direct link to the image and the second, a little bit of HTML code that well embed the image into a web page.
