My baja is a 69 and I don't like the stock inside door handles. I found some I like but they are for pre 66. Dose anybody know if there is a way to make them work?
Thanks

It is not a direct swap.

Hey perrib,
Would it work if we got the pre 66 release mechanisims?
I found them online but I can't tell if the bolt holes are equal distance as the later type.

Pre 66 also use a different striker striker plate. I never tried swapping them but it should not be that hard. The later model bear claw latches are safer.

Uh, wasn't talking about the stiker plate and associated hardware.
This: www2.cip1.com/ProductD...%2D021%2DB
Compaired to this: www2.cip1.com/ProductD...%2D019%2DB

Are the bolt hole distances the same? or close?

Sorry, I misread the sentence. The bolt holes are not close also the throw of the early model is half that of the latch model. It or the late model latch would would have to be modified. Like I said before it could be done but it is not a direct swap. It would take an hour or two to get the first one debugged.

**UPDATE**
I successfully made it work. I purchased the pre '66 latch release units and modified them for the '68. Took about an hour and a half for both.

perrib you were dead on about the throw differences.

liftman_2002, if you or any one else is interested in how, I'll post some pic's with steps later on when I get time to do so.

Here goes, I hope.
This is with the original release rod still attached to the latch assembly. Do not remove until ready to cut and weld extension near end.

First you'll need a pre '66 release assembly and handle, VW fender nut and a peg board hook or some thing that is close to the release rod diameter. I used what I had around my garage and plus the peg board had a near perfect "Z" bend which I used to link to the release assembly.

Next, cut the fender nut in half and grind or file the threaded side to fit the release assembly arm (where the rod would attatch). Straighten peg board hook if that what you use. See below for the idea.

Now, file the mount holes on the release assembly to match the mount holes on the door (I needed to file towards the center pin), then align the release assembly with the mount holes and drill a hole (I needed 3/4") directly where the pin and raised area (center finger) will contact the door surface. This is viewed from the rear or inside of the assembly.

Once you have it mounted, grab the modified fender nut and place on the release arm to get an idea where to weld. I chose to place mine pretty much straight with the existing arm, basically making it longer with the modified fender nut. Weld to the release arm, and drill a hole the same size as the rod. (see pic below)

Once thats done, remount the assembly with the peg board rod with "Z" bend engaged in the newly welded and drilled part of the release arm. Pull the original release rod up and align the two as below and mark an area to cut the original release rod. MAKE sure your not pulling hard enough to activate latch release, just keep tension on it. Cut and then weld the peg board rod to the original release rod.

Final product. Cool Has plenty of throw to open the door.

Let me know if you have any questions..
