1. the back end sags more than 6inches, too much to adjust with adjuster. new springs are needed... Sad I'll be measuring and posting up the data for advice Confused


2. passenger side rear wheel has some play to it.... when sitting, i can rock the wheel back and forth and see/ feel a 1/4 inch play between the disc and 3x3. this is the first on the list now, pull it apart and I hope to find that theres only a loose nut on the stub or something easy/cheap.....

so the specs on the rear coils and springs are as follows:

36" eye to eye coils (16" travel)

16" 450lb lower main spring
12" 300lb upper tender spring

>>> as it sits::::

9 inches of clearance to the tranny mount,
17" from lower eye to top of main spring, another 10" to top of tender spring at adjuster, total of 27"

>>> when lifted to wheels almost off ground::::

15 inches of clearance to the tranny mount,
19" from lower eye to top of main spring, another 13" to top of tender spring at adjuster, total of 32"

> all that being said, theres too much droop to crank down the adjuster, and that would just rob the travel, so im thinking about leaving the main 'lower' springs as they dont compress to much and trying out a set of 14" 450lb upper' tender springs. that should stiffen it up to the point where I wont have 6"+ of back end sag. any ideas/ thoughts/ comments???

fixed one problem only to find another..

the pass rear wheel was loose because the axle nut was not tight, only finger tight. im glad i found that. also found that im missing cotter pins everywhere around the car, the axle nuts had no cotter pins, and the rack and pinion tie rod ends had no cotter pins.

next issue found (video attached), i noticed a lot of cv grease around the flanges on the tranny side, with the wheel off the ground, when you move it i noticed the flange was loose, the bolts were also... only finger tight. looks like i will be going through everything on the car to make sure its all squared away. thats shotty.

ok. so we have shift change this weekend, so my next day off is monday. the plan is to tighten the cv flange bolts and do a quick look over ( tighten everything thats loose, add much needed missing cotter pins etc) so i can drive the car a couple miles to my friends fab/suspension shop and try out a couple of different spring rates/lengths/weights. once i have the correct springs in, time to pull the axles and cv's, inspect and repack cvs/bearings and check the trans oil. after that, check all brake components, add some steel braided lines, new brake line bent to the right place, then clean all surface rust off the tubing, fix some welds, sandblast hard to reach rust spots, prep, prep, and more prep....and shoot some primer. after thats done, wet sand, prep, prep, and prep again, then paint, (maybe clearcoat or single stage...havent decided) then buff...then start on the wiring, then carpet/ sound deaden interior, then i might be able to sit back and relax. Smile quite the list, but s***, thats where all the fun is at.

First off Mark, You drove this thing from Mesa to Flagg withing an hour of it being started for the first time, we didnt even have a chance to go over ANYTHING because we were on a tight deadline for you. While there are some things that should have been caught, had we had the opportunity to keep it a couple of days after it was running we would have caught 99% of that stuff. And in the future if you have an issue with something, talk to ME first before you post here.

The master cylinder is THREADED and doesnt require nuts on it, because this was a super beetle pan the master cylinder hole had to be cut and the 1/2 gap is because of the super pan, thats as far as it will go in, but was tight when it left here, I oversaw that myself.

so, Ive been talking to Chris from FOA and after going over all the measurements, Im trying to figure out why I dont have the travel a 3x3 should be getting. below are some photos of full droop, and full bump, on top of needing stiffer shocks, should I grind off the lower stop lip on the spring plate and go with limit straps? I still need to measure the cv angle to make sure its no more than 25 degrees. Chris was saying that the upper shock mount may be in the wrong place, but it looks like its right to me, so Ill be measuring all that too.
