Welcome static,
I to am converting a 68' that used to be an auto-stick according to the guy I bought it from. Ball joint front and IRS rear.
One thing for sure is you have found the right place. These guys are full of knowledge. If you have doubts, STOP and ask some one here. You will get an answer and pretty quick. I've experienced the nervousness a few times too, but after I popped the questions here, I got answers that helped me proceed with confidence 'cause I know these guys are "good".
I would suggest (as in the begining of this topic) that you invest in the "Baja Bugs and Buggies" by Jeff Hibbard book if not already. Very good source of info.
I'm north of you (VA), it's good to see some one else on the east coast here!

my biggest challenge has been the brakes. The brake lights work whenever they want it can be very dangerous at times. Are there any tips out there

brake light switches under the gas tank would be my first check. You may have 2 switches. Replace both.

have a few questions though.

is it common for the fuel line to be blocked or kinked? is there anything in the tank that could break down over time and block the passage? are fuel pumps a common part to fail??

may seem like newbie questions but hey. im a newbie to vws lol.

All info would be apreciated.

Yes, the tank in my old '66 was rusted and rotting on the inside, contaminated the entire fuel system from tank to the fuel filter before the carb. I replaced the tank and all rubber lines. While I had all of the rubber lines off I shot carb cleaner and compressed air through the hard line in the tunnel.

can someone help me with my baja? i have done just about everything and can not seem to get this thing to start. i baught it about a week maybe 2 ago and when i picked it up it ran great. drove it home from suprise to mesa/gilbert and would not start when i unhooked it from my truck.

i have changed the plugs, wires, condenser, points (set at .016"), coil, and went threw the entire fuel system and made sure that the pasage was clear. the carb is full of gas. fireing order is correct (i think from what the diagram says).

i live off of gilbert and southern so if anyone is around the area i would definatly apreciate some help.

thanks alot,
Cole

What does it do? Does it turn over? Does it try to fire?

Get your #1 to Top dead center and see where your rotor is pointed.
