Well, first post here. Sorry If I am in the wrong section x.x
I've had this bad itch for an off road vehicle for years now and the baja bug has always been a favorite of mine. Been lurking here for a week now, reading up on them and looking over prices for parts and stuff. Pretty amazed how cheap everything is especially compared to my car.(300zx)

I found one selling local for $650. 1969 with a baja kit and a good motor, but the car isn't drivable "Good Project Car" Yet he didn't tell me what exactly was wrong with it, trying to find out. I'm just guessing on suspension, transmission, drivetrain etc...

Would any of you experts 'consider' buying this for a fixer upper? Sorry I don't have much more info on it (yet)

Sadly that is all the pictures he sent me, and no engine shots. =/

Also, how do these vehicles hold up to frame rust? Is that something major I need to check for?

Got more info, His direct message;

"Odds and ends on the motor and trans to be fixed or repaired. Starter solenoid, rebuild or give the carb. a good cleaning,. tune up. Fuel line is leaking and fuel pump may be bad. I've not had a chance to really check it out but is not getting fuel up. I put a new coil on it last summer and it ran fine. But when I started it last weekend I had to keep pouring gas into the carb.Shifter needs tighting, emergency brake needs installed. Body has rust in the floor pans. Needs new interior through out. Front end needs ball joints and bushings. Has new brake master solenoid and front solenoids. need rear brakes rebuilt. A lot of the wiring has been replaced but may still be some in need. Has all the glass but front windshield has a crack. Turn signal lever is bad. they work off of a toggle switch. I probably have lost a window or door handle. front seats need recovered. back seat is stored in my shed and was good last time I saw it. Its been buried for a while. Heater is forced air and has been plugged. (heaters didn't work very well when new) Wipers and lights work. If your a mechanic and body man, your looking a lot of little things but no major rebuilds. I bought it about 12 years ago, worked on it, got it running and cleaned up and drove it some the first couple of years I had it. Not out on the road much because the front end is really bad. After that I didn't have the time or money to mess with it. Now I don't have the time, money or want to."

What if I could get it for around $300?
How much do you think a complete rebuild like that would cost? Most standard Beetle's for sale around here are around 3-4k from what I've seen.

I agree. For $650 here, you can generally find either something totally rusty you can drive home, or a good body with no engine. That car is neither.

If Baja's are hard to find where you are, it might be worthwhile. Pan replacement is quite common and involves pulling the body off the pan to do correctly. Look at heater channels, pillers etc for rust. Those areas are harder to fix. It will require some work, but most things are not too bad. I would be looking at 2-300 if rust is not major in structural areas.

Like every one said, it depends on time, cash and ability. Of course how deep you want to go.
I replaced one heater channel and both floor pans myself for the first time and it was no biggie, but I had time, ability and just enough cash. If the rust holes were any worse such as in the frame head or tunnel I would've passed.
In any event, good luck and let us know what happens.

Thanks guys, I passed on that Baja. Little to much time involved for me, that and I lack a garage to work in >.<

Right now I'm looking at this one:
huntsville.craigslist....45675.html

For $950 what do you guys think?

Again, it depends on your area. How long have you been looking for a car? It took me a couple months to get a feel for what was reasonably priced around here.

That ad has a lot of things that would scare me away for the price. Sounds like the engine needs a rebuild. "Needs floor pans" usually means much worse rust issues.

Economic times are harsh right now, and old cars shouldn't command much money.

Bottom line, if you can truly drive it home and the heater channels aren't jacked, it'd probably be worth buying.

Kyle

I've been looking for around a month. Ive seen tons of Super Beetles for $2-3k + But not many standards.
I'm good for a rebuild, or an engine swap. I wouldn't mind one, I need the experience. But rust is something I would rather not deal with if it's too bad...But I guess almost any 30+ year old car is going to have some rust though. I'd rather not be replacing any Heater Channels. >_>
I might go by and take a look at this one since it's on the way to my new job site.
The bad thing about my area is that the bad economy has not shown it's face here. This place is booming, and so are it's car prices.
