If its only when you Fill Up with a fresh tank, its most likely the filler tube - assuming you have a 68-up car with a gas door on the pass side.

If the tunnel was leaking, OR even the fitting at the base of the tank, you would have the smell more often than just after fillups.

There is an air escape tube (sorry bad English) near the filler tube, that's often the cause of petrol fumes.
If it is gas you smell from the exhaust it is probably a heater hose that is lose.
Often the on that goes from the fanhouse to the exhaust. On the exhaust side. That is close to the end pipe and fumes will be sucked up in the heater system.

i took off all of the heater box assembly so thats not the problem. the filler hose and the fitting on the bottom of the tank i just went through so thats not the problem. but it might be that small escape tube thing that dutchbugs talking about. does the gas hard line go from the frame head all the way to the rear fuel line without any other (rubber) connections?

The fuel line in the tunnel is metal from end to end, which does not mean it can't rust and spring a leak. The part about being a full tank points to a tank/sending unit/filler neck issue though.

i was driving it just now and felt a slight breeze on my leg, then realizing that air is flowing into the car from the front through the ashtray(which is cracked open) so i think that fumes from the tank vent are coming in from there probably?

Is the top of the tank dry? If so look at the filler neck/vent tubes.

all the tubes look dry, but i kan smell very strong fumes from the vent tube rite next to the filler neck so that could be the culprit.
