I'm very new to VWs, I bought a '71 Bug for a baja project but after having it at home found out it was a Super Beetle and then to find out that those are no good front end wise for a baja.I have a guy that wants to trade me my '71 super for his '70 standard that is already cut for a baja and has a ball and joint front end and an IRS rear.My question is how far can I push that front end to have fun off road?Is that a good trade, I'm really looking into the off road scene. Thanks guys.

i have ball joint and as perri can say that i have done alot of stuff in my baja. i have the bj/irs set up and it is great. i have the big tires and 1641 and i can go alot of places and then some.
i think it is a good trade if you really really want a baja. get it and start hacking away...
(i would trade a super for a standard any day)
do it man

It'll e more than fine. There are entire racing classes dedicated to building around a BJ front end.

I was told it would bust the front end up if I ran that setup.I know jumps wouldn't be in the picture if I use the b/j front so what are my limits on running it? Any suggestions on parts to beef up the front and rear?

well if you want to just do trail runs like most of us, i've never had a problem with my BJ front, and iv'e even had my front tires off the ground a few times landing quite hard with no damage, i wouldn't reccomend that however Rolling Eyes

But if you want to just upgrade to a better front end you might as well just pickup a Link pin setup. i'm running everything you don't want in a baja on mine, mainly because i don't have a choice right now: Swing rear, Bj front

i'll get a 3X3 IRS rear one of these days. Cool

No. It won't bolt up without modification. Bugzilla makes a custom front end that will bolt up, though. Otherwise, you'll need to cut and weld a bit.

I make a conversion beam. My website is www.bugzyla.com but the best way to reach me is through PM or at 480-444-2501. If you are going to do just trail riding and not get too crazy a balljoint front end will work fine. But for ultimate strength and suspension travel you need a link pin front end. I can build you a conversion beam for $350 plus shipping. These are made from all new materials, and can be stock width to 12 inches wider (same cost) and have any length shock towers you want, comes with adjusters. You just need to get torsion springs, arms, spindles and brake assemblies from a link pin front end.

I also build these beam without shock towers and for through rods (for using coil over shocks)

Conversion Beam any width up to 12" over $350 includes any length shock tower and 4 adjusters.

Same beam without shock towers $270

Beam without shock towers and without adjusters (through rod) $200
