WOOT WOOT! haha, i hate when people "woot" but thats just how glad i am to find a bug. ok, so i have been looking sense 2007 (and been a memeber here sense 2007) for the perfect bug (for me). something that runs and can be driven with minimal rust (IN OHIO), with a decent interior and decent exterior and for no more than 1500. i took some time off from looking because of school and lack of funds... but 2 days agao, i bought, for 1500 bones, a 74 standard beetle that i drove home almost and hour and then drove to work today and it has minimal rust. i dont have any real plans yet, so here i am! ive been reading and following builds for a while and i have an idea of what i want, but need some guidance! here is my first list of questions:

1. what engine does my bug have (t1, 1600 or whatev, i dont knwo the diff's?)

2. tons of shifter slop... just that PITA bushing?

3. i get a clunk sound from the drivers side rear when i hit bumps.. anything?

4. there is a little play in the steering. it is driveable but on the highway it is a little darty, what causes this?

5. (i have the book in the mail comming from amazon) whats the easiest way to get 12" of travel front and rear? converting the front to link pin is absolutely an option if need be. - i was thinking a 6" beam + 1.5" arms for the frotn and 3x3 rear's with 930 cv's, will that do it?- i really like az350x's (i think is his SN) set up. thats what im going for looks wise at least.

6. whats the biggest engine kit i can install w/o a ton of case machining?

7. should i get a pict 30 carb (for now)? does my carb have a choke? if so i dont think its working...

8. there are 2 round knobs under the raido delete hole, what do they do??

thanks for years of guidance and help! i cant wait to get this going!!

I think with a stock case you can up grade to a 1641. don't quote me on that though. You could also build a stroker. but if you are going to spend that kinda money you might as well just machine the case and build a good one. as for the carb upgrade. For a stock 1600 i have found the stock carb to work just fine. If you wanted to upgrade to something i would get much bigger than a progressive weber set up.

I used to run a progressive weber on a stock 1600 with a set of scat 1.25 rockers and it ran pretty good untill it blowed in to pieces. that was back in my dumb teenage years. but i was only doing as many rpms as it would before it wouldn't build anymore. I didn't have a tac to tell what it was really doing. It was making lots of noise though. that is before it blew up. Less after.

anyone else able to answer any of my questions? thanks guys!

Most likely its a 1600, but you will need to look under the generator stand and get the engine code off there to verify.

acousticrawk wrote:

Slop where? Probly the coupler from the shaft to the nosecone - under rear seat. Very easy and cheap to replace.

acousticrawk wrote:

This is probly a sway bar rubber went bad or broke. Is the car lowered at all? IF so, if could also be the spring plate hitting the shock tower - or possibly a broken shock bolt.

Play can come from the gear box. I beleive you can adjust some of that out. Also, check the steering dampner while you in there

Prepare to spend a lot getting that travel. As 350x, how much he has in it, most likely its more than he wanted. For the front, you will NEED LP to even get close, rear is gonna require arms and CV's and most likely reworking the suspension and adding a cage to mount Coilovers.

acousticrawk wrote:

1641 is the biggest without Machining. If you have to machine, go with a 1915, same cost.

It should have an Electric Choke. Make sure it has power going to it. Also check the idle circuit - make sure it has power. The Pict34's dont mesh well with an 009 dizzy if you have one.

These should open up Driverside and Passenger side air vents by the windshield.

Peace
