Just read an article in the April edition of Hot VW's that talks about bullet proofing your pedals. This made me inspect my assembly a little closer than I had originally and a good thing to. My clutch cross shaft hook is worn quite a bit. The rest appears fine. Stripped it all down to clean, inspect and paint.
The article talks about that as well as beefing up the clutch pedal by adding some metal to the rear/side of the pedal. Neat idea and I spent an hour or so bending and tweaking a piece of 1 1/2 inch metal to fit and weld once the cleaning is done.

So here are my questions: Question Question Question Question Question Question
1- have any of you guys done this mod to the pedal?
2- Would you fill in the worn clutch hook with weld and then clean it up or would you just by another?

Funny you ask. I just spent Friday night welding up a clutch hook, When it was done it was a lot stronger. I have also needed to weld up my clutch pedal arm because it broke. I didn't put a new plate on it, but it seems like a good idea.

I usually weld the hooks up and grind them down too. The weld is actually harder than the original metal and will last longer.

No lie, the hook looked 100x stronger than the rest of the pedal cluster Smile

No kidding fatalifeaten, that sucker looked "beefy" but they say the better one is dificult to find so I started looking for the next best thing, Bupack. Couldn't find any site that claimed they carried those except Bupacks, but they don't show prices online.
I may just take the same material I used to beef up the pedal and add it to the hook, grind and make pretty. Although I think it's soft metal. Guess I'll have to harden it with some fire.
You guys think one of those plumber type torches using MAPP gas would be enough to harden?

knowing how to drive without clutch is good. I never have had to but I taught myself and can do it ok enough to limp out of a bad situation.

I had to drive for a week without a clutch once when I was broke and broken at the same time. It was a pain in the ass, because I had to drop off the kids at a daycare center up in the hills with a lot of red lights.

It can be done.

It's just a little bit of a challenge.

Sorta like when you break a throttle cable and have to tie your shoelaces together to rig one up going out your side window.

Done that too.

Add a cup of coffee in one hand, shifting, braking, turn signals, and clutching, and you have a new Olympic event! Don't bother answering the cell phone if it rings. It can't be done.

Stopping sucks then the starting it up again looks real funnny.

Getting the rusty old pedal assembley apart can be a challange in it self. I had to heat the rusty old set i got up to allmost red hot to drive out that pin. to replace the brake return spring. Man that little pin would not budge! Untill I used the heat wrench, then out it came. Cleaned it all up, replaced the spring and painted it up with rustolem paint. The biggest problem I had was the pedal mount from EMPI. I will never buy anouther one of those CHEAP things again. I had to weld and renforce it 2 times with steel plates to keep it from bending and the stop at the bottom wasen't even close to being right. I spent 4 hours on makeing that POS work. I sent them a nasty gram on that one.

and if you have three daughters who think the clutch is to hard to push you can add a 1/2 inch to the hook for more leverage....
