1971 Std. Beetle, 1600cc dp with many a problem!

Down the list to fix:

Drivers window regulator
Realign both doors
New exterior door handles
Front brakes are 100% shot
Front end is 100% shot
Sizable fuel leak
Lights are horrible (front and rear)
Turn signals don't work
Void where the stock fuse box was.
Under the battery? Gone...
Dead Battery.
Carb needs rebuilt.

Down the list of things I already have to fix the things that need us some fixin':

"New" front end with disc brakes (Check x2)
"New" fuel tank (Check)
Door exterior door handles.
Window Regulators
Tail Lights
Sheet metal for under the battery
Sheet metal to cover fuse box hole.
Carb rebuild kit

So pretty much from what I can tell, right now to get it 50% decent I just need fuel line and a battery!

The perks:

Brand new 4pt roll bar
Brand new 5pt racing belts
Brand new seats
Good carpet
Minimal rust for the midwest
Brand new CV joints
Tranny rebuilt 5k miles ago
Engine sounds fantastic
Converted to electronic ignition
It actually runs and drives decently!

Now question, how in Gods name do I replace the fuel line going down the tunnel?

Yeah but the problem is, over time that metal line in the middle can sometimes completely rust through if the car has been sitting long enough in the right conditions. I believe when VW put that line in, the bottom of the tunnel had yet to be welded on so they just slipped it up from the bottom. Plus I'm guessing there are a few tabs that wrap around it that they have welded to the tunnel. I'm not 100% that's where the fuel leak is, but given my luck lately...

I'll test the line itself by running a low amount of compressed air through it and having somebody put their finger on the other side. If air continues to rush through, we've got a problem and I'll probably have to run a new metal line inside the car itself. If it holds air, I'll probably end up replacing all the rubber lines off it.

Why don't you just run a new one parallel to it, leave the old one in there? You'll have to cut an extra hole at each end, but weld up around the steel line nicely when you're done and you should be fine. Or, you could run one external to the tunnel, but I don't know if you're comfortable with having a fuel line inside the cab.

By the way, nice car. I've noticed that even nice beetles are getting super cheap. I'm gonna buy another as soon as I get rid of my Z28 (super cheap as well!)
