Hi Fellas,

I'm Grunt-0341. I found your site after searching for Bajas when gas prices shot up to over $4.00 a gal. I drive a '03 4x4 Chevy Silverado Z71 that only gets 17mpg on the highway. I just think Bajas are cool, would get better gas mileage and be a blast to drive. I don't have a Bug yet but wnat to get one soon. One in decent shape and good price is hard to find in Ohio.

Now to get to the subject of my post. I'm looking to move to AZ in the next couple of years and am thinking about places between Tucson and the border. I'm also thinking about the Yuma area. Do you fellas have any ideas of where my wife, two children, (12yrs)(7yrs) and I should plant new roots.

Grunt-0341

Sierra Vista would also be worth checking out. A lot of retired military live there because of thew air force base. It has its own hospital land and houses are cheap compared to the metro areas. There are two VW shops in town.

Hi Fellas,

Thanks for the replies. I hope that I can move soon. As stated I want to move there in the next 2 - 3 years. How do jobs pay in these areas? Are they easy to find?

kcnaz, Thanks for the link. I will check it out. Sahuarita looks good and may be the place I move. What are home prices like there? What is the crime rate like? Tucson also is a possibility, but I read of gang activity there what with tags being marked and the like. I really need to know the parts of the city well to decide what area to live in there.

perrib, Sierra Vista looks good also. What are home prices and the crime rate like there?

wazhier, I first thought Yuma, because I am a Marine Vet, hence the name Grunt-0341, but read in other forums that it is very boring, crime is horrible, and a report that a woman was kidnapped in broad daylight brought some where and was raped. Forum writers wrote that it was not safe to walk down the streets there. It scared me to bring my family there. What do you know of the place? Is it as bad as I read? Here is the link I got the info from www.city-data.com/city/Arizona.html

Could not say about the crime. Seems quiet. Not many police cars. Whetstone, Hereford, Huachacha City are on the outskirts and are horse property. My sister bought 10 fenced acres, 3 car garage, 2000 sq ft Modular house, well and 2 rv pads 3 septic tanks fort $180,000 in Whetstone.

Yuma's population about triples in the winter, due to snowbirds. Town is VERY congested with traffic for about half the year (cooler half). My folks lived there years ago when I was USMC, and I visited a few times. Seemed ok, but the proximity to the US/Mex border and immigration-related crime makes me think I wouldn't wanna live there.

BUT- being that close to the dunes would be AWESOME, for awhile at least.

Perrib,

Sierra Vista looks great, but it may be too far away from the malls and bigger chain stores for my wife. Also right now I can't afford much in the way of a home. Aprox $110,000 max.

az350x,

Semper Fi. When were you in? What was your MOS (Job)? As I'm sure you can tell from my name, I was a grunt. 81mm Mortar Man. I was in from '85 - '89. I was stationed at Camp Lejune, Jacsonville, NC 1st Batt 6th Mar 2nd Mar Div. Dunes sound great. Yuma would be cool because of the fellow Marines there, but the crime is a worry. I need a safe place to bring my Family.

6017- F/A-18 Powerplant mechanic/Plane Captain, but I spent most of my tour as a Maintenance Controller, coordinating all maintenance on the squadron's 12 aircraft. I was in from '86-92, and at El Toro, except for three 6-month WestPac tours ('87, 89-90, and 91). We deployed to Yuma a few times, but I didn't have any off-road toys along to play with then. Now, the wife and kids and I try to head that way to the dunes 3-4 times/year. LOVE the sand. We ride quads there though- the baja stays home.

$110k? I'd think you'd be able to find something in Southern AZ for that kinda dough these days, although I don't know what the job market would be like. Are you Border Patrol or something?

Welcome aboard. "Leatherneck" is another fellow jarhead (bet you couldn't tell from the username, eh?) Laughing

In Tuscon you could find an old 900-1100 sq ft house on a 6k sq ft lot for 100-120K less if its abandoned.

In the Seirra Vista area you could get an acre or two and a newer 2000 sq ft double wide for $110,000. There is plenty places for your wife to buy things at there. It just starting is coporate slum build of red tile roofs and low wage paying coporate stores.

Google real estate cochise county AZ and also look in Tuscon's craigslist

Swinging with the wing, huh. I tried it and was sent to school in Millington, TN for Navigational Aides (MATCU), but failed it because I drank too much and didn't study as hard as I needed to. So the Corps made me a Grunt.

While a Grunt I moved quite a bit. 7 month (yes we were extended) NATO/MED float combined (USS Saipan LHA 2) (all over Europe) '86 - '87, Mountain Warfare Training Bridgeport, CA '87, Desert Training CAX 29 Palms (Stumps), CA '87, 6 month WestPac, (5 Month) Camp Swab. Okinawa, (The Rock) Japan, (1 Month) CubiPoint/Subic Bay Olongapo City. Philippines.

No. I'm not border patrol, but I am thinking about it. I may take a job working with youth and crime prevention.

Yea. $110,000 max. I'm poor Crying or Very sad

Seirra Vista is looking good. How desolate is it? how far is it from Tucson?
