alright I have a question on a RUST problem. I have a '71 back in Oklahoma that is in my moms back yard. on 04july07 somebody burnt my entire back yard with some fireworks, including my '71 and '67. I have went back and checked them out if I knock on the body it seems pretty solid just covered in rust. the paint is gone completely, melted the glass, transaxle and pretty much everything else that was not steel. Evil or Very Mad

my question (which is probabely pretty stupid) do you guys think there is even a miniscule chance of salvaging the '71 (the '67 was pretty bad off anyways). I know it would take alot of hours to sand and what not but I dont have much of a time restraint. I am just wondering if it would have been tempered in a way to weaken the body, or rust on the inside of say the channels where I couldnt reach to fix would turn cancerous.

I know their probabely a lost cause but I already own them and I can't seem to find any around biloxi mississippi where I live now within a reasonable price range, plus its pretty hard to convince my wife to let me buy a car that doesnt run no matter how close it is.

I figured I would add I do have access to a welder and a plasma cutter if I need one.

It would probably last a long time before rusting out. You could fill the heater channels with the wax type european undercoat it flows wells and would get in most of it.

i know some guys that look for cars in barns and cars that have been sitting in yards with grass growing threw the floor boards and stuff and almost anything can be sanded and fixed with time. im sure that you can get the cars back to near perfect condition with time and money.

do you think that would be the only place I would have a problem. think there is a place I could have it dipped or something. I was actually thinking it might be kinda a good thing if the steel is still good since I will have to tear the entire thing down I could powder coat the entire thing if I could get all the rust out of all the nooks and crannys. I may go pick up the car in a couple weeks.

here is what i think. go and get the car. take the car to your house or whereever you are going to be working on it at. and go and get it media blasted or sand blasted whatever it is. then you will know for the most part what you are dealing with if you think that there is to much work then all well. but if you think you can make this thing pretty again sand it all down and replace all things that need to be replaced. like floor boards and all the goods. get that thing looking good get a nice paint job and make it nice then there you go you have a beauty and something that you basically built and restored.

thanks for the info. I just googled chemical dipping and I believe it is out of my price range $900 for the dipping $1000 for e-coating. there actually is 2 places in mississippi which is kinda cool since their kinda rare to find.

but I think I will have it media blasted, I will hopefully have it here by the end of february. I will post pics of the project since I bet I probabely have the worst rust problem ever. from what I remember the heater channels are/were rust free. But I know the floor is crap. basically all that is left is the body and sub frame. motor was locked up when I bought it for $150 no title.

actually locked up was a nice way to put it that is what they said when I got it. they said they had no idea why it locked up. me and my friend brought it home pulled the engine and after a long time of prying and beating on the block finally broke loose the rusted pistons and out of the block came a silver/black/white goo with metal chunks it looked nasty. at one point I think it was motor oil and I have no idea what else. plus the engine melted in the fire.

first and reverse were out of the tranny and the wheels wouldnt turn we had to pull it on and off the trailer with my friends truck and only one wheel turning. but the body was mostly good.

it had hit something so the front end was bent but I like bajas anyways so I dont care. cant wait till I find out what shape it is in, sounds kinda funny to say that after all I have said.

if it was hot enough to melt the glass and aluminum, I'd be very worried about if and how it warped the bodies. I'd probably scrape anything just hanging off of it, if by some grace of God the thing still looks good, personally I would strip it down to a shell and have it acid dipped and coated. This will remove all of the rust and protect it in the future from rusting in spots you can't get to.

I think when I checked it out for myself, acid dipping a bug ran about $400-700 bucks but it's a worth while investment if you plan on keeping it for awhile. As soon as I'm finished replacing my body panels, mine is going in for the same treatment.

when I looked at it it didnt "look" warped it looked exactly the same just rust colored. in september it didnt have any cancerous rust no flakes or anything just looked like surface rust. body looked straight still no dents suprisingly. it didnt melt the aluminum to just a puddle mainly just the bell housing the heads were inside it and they didnt melt. but no telling what it will look like when I clean up the surface.

I will probabely call the co. that does dipping here when I get the time.

but for the prices I have been seeing I might just buy a body. back in Ok I could find one pretty easy but I have been gone a while. I dont know any beetle heads here the only guy I met with one paid $8000 for a baja that only had the kit on it no suspension work and was trying to get it running about a week after he got it. I wanted to laugh at him and ask what the heck he was thinking but I was nice. back in the day I could get one that drove for like $600.
