Your Baja was originally manufactured for street use. I’m not sure that these regulations apply. It seems like they are ignoring a large part of the off-roading community (ie. Trucks, Bajas, rock crawlers etc.)

I wonder how this will all play out.

It is going to be interesting when it comes to Sand Rails and Dune Buggies.

well the 1800 pound thing will take a lot of them out. and since its more of a full size vehicle, might be able to just keep on with regular plates, instead of this. since most forest service guys won't have a scale.

Ok so the way I read that is I can get a Vin for my rail and get it registered (which would give me the OHV plate) and then just get the sticker and I can drive it on the road provided I have insurance.
I only need to have brakes, a muffler and a spark arrester?

When I did mine and a couple others DMV required:
1. windshield
2. brake lights
3 Wiper
4 Tail lights
5 brake lights
6 Seat belts
7 E brake
8 four wheel brakes
9 wiper

Since then they have waived the requirement for a windshield and wiper as long as a helmet and googles are worn.

An OHV plate is not the same as "registered for street use." Every OHV will need to be registered, meaning have a VIN number AND currently titled/registered. All this has nothing to do with being street legal. Once an OHV meets those requirements, it will need to have a "Copper sticker" annually- the equivalent of a tag on your car/truck license plates. My understanding is that this annual copper sticker will cost in the neighborhood of $25/year/OHV. Also, as I understand it, if your OHV is not street legal, at this time there is no insurance requirement for non-street-use OHV's. (Not saying it isn't prudent, I'm saying it isn't required).

Perrib, I agree if I register it as a car it will need all of those things, but if I register it as a motorcycle/atv then I don't think I will need the entire list, I'm just not sure what I will need.
az350x, Doesn't the OHV sticker replace the copper sticker? Or is that now going to be an extra charge?

The only reason you see sandrails with MC plates on them is because they are titled and registered, NOT street legal. If you want a buggy to be street legal, it will end up with a full-sized license plate, and be subject to the entire list of requirements. I'm reasonably sure that is a correct answer.

The OHV sticker and 'copper sticker' are the same thing, as I understand it. It's basically an annual OFF-ROAD registration tag, similar to the annual tag you buy for your street-legal vehicles.

Well I finally got everything together to get this thing registered. After talking to some other rail owners that had the MC plates I decided to try that way myself.
I went to the one on Bell and this older guy came out in a horrible mood (probably woke him up from a nap). I told him I would like to register the rail and he didn't say a word, just went back in and came out with a piece of paper that showed a rail on top and gave a list of things it must have. Which was the standards things that everyone says.

I told him I just want to register it as an OHV for offroad use only and he said you need all the things on that paper to get a title.

Then he said you don't even have a horn. So I beeped it and said yeah I do. You don't have a place to mount the plate he said. I pointed out the two tabs on back and said it'll fit right there. Wheres the light at. Right there mounted on the bar above the tabs. At this point the guy finally just said you need a windshield. I was like whatever dude.

So I remember someone said something about the place in Buckeye was a good place to go. So I make the trek to Buckeye only to find them closed on Fridays. Well it surely doesn't say that on the web site.

Just as I am about to give up, I find another one and hope that the third times a charm.
Young guy comes out with the handheld machine and says Wats up Bro? Could this really work? Have I found the spot at last?

I said Dude your peeps over in Buckeye are taking the day off so I have to make you work.

I told him I need to title and register this piece of art. He laughs and I see he is wearing a Bengals id card holder so I start talking about them and how I'm from Cincinnati and such.

He asks if I built it, yes I did. What year you want on the title, 69 was a good year, I'll take that. Your all set go on inside and they will take care of you. SWEET

I go inside pay my 37 dollars and I now have an ATV with MC plates fully licensed to drive on the road.

I call my insurance agent tell her and she throws 10k of insurance on it and I am all good.

It really is which place you go.
