Yeah buddy! I am hoping to get that other tire mounted and balanced this weekend and maybe go out shooting in the desert and see how well she does off road a little bit too! We will see if time permits all that though. Haha!

Haha! I hear ya man. I was getting discouraged for a while there, but now that it is running, I have high hopes again! lol. I do have a question though for ya'll though. When I was changing out the rear shocks, I noticed that the lower shock mounting thing-a-ma-jig is ground down REALLY roughly on the bottom. I may have to get pictures to explain it exactly, but it almost looks like somebody drove it without a tire on the right rear and drug it down the street! Is that something I can replace? Sample, did you ever notice this or have any idea how it came about? It really weirded me out when I saw it because I couldn't imagine how it could have happened.

I guess that could be it, but I really don't think so. It sure looks like it was ground down very roughly. Either way, I think it is Ok enough for right now anyways.
Another question for you guys, my dad has a set of Nankang tires that were on the front of his rail when he bought it. They are 7.00 x 15s. Right now I have 205 15s on the front and was thinking about getting those Nankangs put on the front whenever I finalyl make it down to get the rear tire mounted and balanced, but I want to make sure they will fit first without rubbing too much. What do you all think? Would they fit on the front with the wide-eye kit thats on there?
I don't have them in front of me right now, but I think they are one of these two tires.

I'm hoping someone will post on this as well. I was thinking of doing the same thing but not sure if they will fit.

I used to have a set on my 64 used them till they both were bald an blew out! I have 8" wide deep set rims on the front so they didnt rub. i will be getting another set as soon as the baja is ready.

The problem I see is that it tested ok and when you crossed terminals to jump it, it did not enguage.....I would say your ignition "system" is not working for one, but after you fix that you may find your starter is bad also.

Thanks for the thoughts on the starter ridinthedunes, but that issue was resolved a while back. On one of these pages I mentioned that when I went down to buy a new starter just to see if that would fix it, I noticed that one of the eyes on the ground strap from the trans was torn. So, while I had LOOKED at it before, I hadn't noticed that it was torn until I bumped it with my elbow while removing the starter. I did end up having to still replace the starter as it must have shorted something out while the ground strap was torn. Again, thanks for the thoughts though.

Those tires should work an many Baja Bugs. Whether they will work on yours depends on
- the year model of your Bug
- modifications from stock on your Bug, including adjustments to wheel travel (ride height IS NOT a consideration - regardless of What the "lifted" truck guys talk about)
- the wheel rim width
- the back spacing of your wheels

7.00 - 15s are common on 5-1600 race Bajas which requires stock dimension beam width, trailing arms and hubs, for a stock overall track measured from wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface. They fit just fine on my 58 baja with it's stock beam, arms and drum brakes, mounted on 15x5x2.5" backspace steel, or 15x3.5x2.25 backspace Centerline wheels. I have fully cycled the suspension and steering with no rub. Stock wheels with 165SR-15 tires DO rub on the edge of the body.

Okey dokey. It is a 66. As far as mods to wheel travel, I don't believe there are any. Wheel rim width, I think they are just stock wheels. They have 205-75-15s on them now. back spacing? I don't know. Sorry, I don't know much about tires and rims. Think I can do it with these wheels or would I have to buy others? I don't have to put those nankangs on, just thought they looked sweet and since my dad doesn't want/need them, I figured they may as well be used somewhere! If I had to, I could eventually buy new wheels for them, but as of right now, i was only thinking of the cost to mount and balance them.

Same tire info applies to you bajaman73.

On another note:
I like the quote in your signature Musicmaniac.

"A sword never kills anybody; it is a tool in the killer's hand. - Lucius Annaeus Seneca"

A screwdriver is just as effective a killing weapon as any gun, just has a more limited effective range. Reloads quicker than most guns though, and never runs out of ammo. Like any semi-auto assault rifle or other gun, one must release the trigger to fire again. Same applies to most ball-point pens. They offer other means to inflict injury, though.

Now back to our regularly scheduled broadcast...

^ Precisely MojaveRacer! I liked the quote as well. Just too bad that most politicians can't see that!

Stock VW 5-lug wheel backspace is 3-1/4". On an otherwise stock 66 Baja, I would expect 700-15s on stock wheels to have rub issues. Stick with the 205s until you get some other wheels.

"Backspace" refers to a measurement of the wheel which is done with the wheel off the car, placing a straight edge across the backside of the rim where the tire meets the rim, and measuring from the straightedge to the mounting surface of the wheel. This is something any untrained non-car type can do pretty easily. The hard part is taking the wheel off the car.
