I'm having a bit of trouble getting the tail lights to work properly on my '76 bug. The headlights are always on and my brake lights and turn signals work but I don't seem to have any tail lights. There is no light switch that I can find.

Anyone have a guess where the light switch might be?

If all else fails, I'll just rewire them into a toggle switch.

I am also looking to identify the year of the tail lights so I can order some new lenses. The bug is a '76 but I think these may have come from an earlier model. I know my front turn signals came from an older bug.

Any ideas?

The switch should be on the dash. If not its hard to say whats been done to it. The lights you have are either from a 68-69 or 70-72. They look the same but the 70-72 lenses are a little bigger. Im sure if you measure them and then call the boys at Chirco they can probably help. If there is a part number on the lens they can probably go by that too.

I'm pretty sure its 68-70 are alike and 71-72 are. Judging from the picture yours look to be 68-70's. The 71-72's are a little rounder at the top.

You are correct, it is 68-70 and 71-72. Here is a link to what chirco has.

Thanks much. I think I'll go ahead and order complete new assemblies. The section that folds the bulbs is looking pretty cruddy.

There is a switch on the dash that a PO has replaced with a toggle but it doesn't seem to have any function. Looks like it's time to drag out the meter and trace some wiring. It's strange but I couldn't find any mention of a light switch in the manual. Time to go exploring.
