The reality is that there's only so much you can do to improve the safety of our beloved old VWs. Unfortunately, time and technology have made this argument even harder to win, with the advent of crumple zones and SRS airbags, etc. A roll cage, while helpful, will not give the protection that many people imagine. Heck, a head-on with a sand dune will fold up a tube-framed rail like an accordion in many cases.

Good luck bajaboi- I feel for you, as I lost this argument myself with my parents about 25 years ago.

If you get one with a 1.5" .120 wall cage that is tied to the bumpers, had good suspension seats with 5 point harnesses, and is well put together, it will be alot safer than your average car. Now Tony has a point, that na iarbagged car would be safer, but put a well built baja up against a non air bag car and it should be safer in my opinion.

My 14 year old son owns a baja and that will be his daily driver when he gets his license.

My problem wasn't trying to get a baja. I didn't much like them back then. I did want an old 51 dodge though. My dad wasn't have any of it. i had found one for 500 bucks and it ran and looked ok. It didn't even have a seat belt one in it though.

I got stuck with with a 82 datsun pickup. So I waited about 6 months sold the datsun and went out and got the dodge. Dad was pissed the deal was done and there was nothing he could do about it. Except ground me for about a month. After he seen how much work i put in it though he came around.

You can buy a cage and bumpers from Chirco, then pay a reputable shop to tie it all together.

The flaw in that is that newer cars have a crumple zone to absorb impact.
