Hi all, new to this site, but it seems to be exactly where I need to be right now. I'm wanting to get my Baja back on the road/off road this winter. I put an add on craigslist looking for a complete 1600 dual port as a starting point for an engine build. It led to a screaming deal on 2 1600 dual ports, but while I was picking them up, the guy offered me the rear end of a 58 bus for $50. I jumped on it and now I don't now how to proceed. I was wanting to swap out the subaru turbo I'm running now for a 1776 or bigger, because the turbo lag on the subaru sucks on the low end with 31's coupled with engine cooling issues with the water cooled. The subaru is awesome at higher rpms, but no fun in the woods/mud.

Do I build the a good 1776 - cam - crank dual carbs, etc, etc or go cheap and get good electric fans for the subaru and run the 58 bus rear end with the gear redux boxes? I think it's probably cheaper to keep the subaru at this point.

I'd also like to figure out if I can run the 69 tranny/irs axles and use the 58 gear redux. I prefer the IRS set up and tranny's seem to last longer for me.

Sorry .... long intro post.

if you use the 69' tranny your gunna have 4 reverse gears and 1 forward gear, because the reduction tranny spins the wrong way.i guess if you wantes to i think that you could flip your ring and pinion in your 69' tranny but that would be a pain....i mite be interested in the reduction boxes if you decided to sell....anyway welcome to AzBaja its by far the BEST vw site there is the people are awsome, the info is great, and you will meet alot of interesting people.

Thanks for the good info.

Flippig the r&P doesn't doesn't scare me much. Sounds like an interesting project, could be done in the basement next to the wood stove, much better than garage work in the winter. Do you know if the irs axles will mate to the redux boxes? Redux boxes to irs spring plates? I could always make new spring plates, but it would be nice to use what I've got.

I've got to admit this is the first time I've got my hands on the gear redux. I've driven a baja with it once, but never really checked out how it worked. I did find that the ratio to the wheel is much lower(torqy-er) than the irs tranny I'm running now.

Thanks again

yea the redux boxes are real nice in the wood's if ya need a lil' extra ground clearance just giv'r some gas and it'l rais the rear...as far as your irs matching up to the reduction box's.....that will be interesting could be done tho,as anything "can" be done.....to be honest i dont know if its been done before or not but there are some guys her that could prolly help such as Bugzila and he knows his stuff.

I've seen a lot of guys talking about trying to mate an IRS with reduction boxes, and considered it once myself. I've never seen one finished successfully, though. There will be a lot of engineering involved. If I were you, I'd consider a much easier mod such as a 002 conversion. I think you'll have a much better product when you're done, and you'll spend less money. If you get a 69-71 you'll have a 5.42 R/P and it'll be a good match for a 1776, even in stock form.

My red baja, BugZyla, has redux boxes. While they are cool and give you ground clearance, they are not the best thing to put a bunch of horsepower to. I am in the process of collecting the parts to convert to 3x3s and a bus 002 irs trans.

If you want to see build pics of my baja just go to bugzyla.com and click on the pictures link. I do still make the upright bus to bug conversion brackets if you do end up going redux.

On another note, I did see one guy that succesfuly mated the redux boxes to and IRS, it worked but looked like more trouble than it was worth.

Thanks for the good info. It sounds like even if I can the redux boxes and irs work, it is going to be a trick. I kind of like the idea of the extra ground clearance.

How big of a job was widening that front beam? It must have taken 2 to make 1 huh?

I've got to do a little wrenching on last winters project before kicking it out of the garage, but I plan to start tearing into the baja by next week. I'm sure I'm gonna have lots more questions.

Thanks again

I have a GRB set up on mine, It's Just OK, looks cool when you hit the gas (Loads forward)and the extra ground clearance helps on the rocky wooded trails in Virginia, I have never run IRS But from what everyone says it's a better way to go. If you go GRB's let me know I will send you all the pics and info I have on setups.

Don't know if BugZyla's mounts are the floating type or not.....if not, you can mount it via mounts that rotate on the tube, this keeps it from "jumping" when you shift or gas it. Ones I've seen also had a torque tube or rod with clevis ends. Daryl is alot more current on all that stuff, my knowledge is from before most y'all were born.....
I've also seen pics of double reduction box setups, stub axle mounted to a second box...think it'd mostly be cosmetic(great clearance...that monster bug look).
Reduction boxes could be had back then with different gear sets too. My 63 1/2 mid year Sundial camper had "alpine" gears...something like 6.38 or so final drive. I could put it in first, get out and walk next to it. Took it over 13,000 feet on roughest scariest road I ever took in the Colorado Rockies.
BUT...all things considered, I'd leave the 58 bus box for the restorers and go with a late T2 and IRS.

Hi, I'm new to the site and I'm re-building my 63 RagTop Baja Bug that I originally put together the first time back in 1985 (I know I'm old). I'm running a Swing-Axle Bus TransAxle (Large Axle Nut) with the Gear Reduction Boxes mounted in the upright position and I thought I'd post a few pics of my setup for you guys to check out. The Adapter Kit I used was called the John Johnson Racing No-Hop Kit that I purchased over 20 years ago, not sure if those guys are around anymore.

The TransAxle was originally built by ITS in San Diego, CA and it has everything good done to it except Chromoly Axle Shafts.
