any body ever see the newer 1.3 liter mazda rotary motor or something like the suzuki hayabusa 1.3 on a bug?
i know that both are small but have incredible rev ranges and the busa' motor puts out about 150 hp at 9,500 rpm, the mazda puts out at least 170 hp at 7,500 rpm. both are water cooled and fuel injected ;(

so, what do you guys think?

I've seen rotaries in a couple of street bugs, but can't remember any bajas. I think I've seen rails with 13b Mazda rotaries.

There's been some posts about a sandrail called the Federal Evo II that has a modified Hayabusa engine in it. It's pretty sick, although a bit pricier than the average baja. Heres a link to a thread about it.

azbaja.com/Forums/view...+rail.html

Every time there's a post about a water cooled engine in a VW I have to tout the Subaru EJ series of engine (WRX and STi), preferably with a turbo. They're not carbed but well worth the extra effort.

well, supposedly, i'm supposed to get 10k after going to boot camp and finishing AIT for the national guard, so i'm thinking 5k complete and running with a motor that is willing to rock anytime i feel the need to go 110 mph in a 25 mph zone
... j/k

get a ford 2.3 or whatever they are. they have like 175 horse without any mods. and all the weight is on the rear wheels.

GM Ecotec is the direction I would go if you get away from the VW motor. They make as much HP as a 2.3 ford but only weigh 50 lbs more than a VW motor. The 2.3 tends to make the car back heavy so you will need minimum 3x3 arms, but better off with a 4x5 or 5x5 to get the wieght better centered over the rear wheels.

The downside to a 'busa motor is no reverse typically. Pushing your car out of every parking spot would suck... Laughing

I think they do run some sort of reverse gearbox on some of them though. I believe you just engage the starter (don't start the motor) to back the car up.

Also the 'busa and rotary engines have low torque, but rev to the moon. The VW transaxle is not going to want a 9000 rpm input shaft speed.

If you want water cooled a Subi or Ecotech are the best fits. Look at all the costs before jumping into either one though. Programmable PCM's, wiring harness modification, radiator, hoses, adapter plate, high pressure fuel system, exhaust, suspension upgrades to handle the weight of the added parts/hardware/engine, roll cage/shock mounts to support the new suspension and oil pan modification on the subi all add up quick.

$5k may not be enough when all is said and done. I have several thousand $$ in cage work alone!

I have seen a rotary motor in a street car. It seem to run pretty good. i really don't think it would be a good choice for a baja. If you want something other than a vw engine i would stick with the toyota or pinto. there a ton of parts for them and they are pretty simple to work on. If you want to go really fast put a turbo on one.

carb (type?), computer? what else do you need.
i'm starting to like the way a big radiator up front might look...

For Ford 2.3 litre turbo, PM Shawn aka Madman74. He is the resident 2.3 turbo guru. Adapter look at www.heckermachine.com/...mation.php

Nice work, nice guy, good price.
