Ok i live in Toledo, OH (not the best place for bajas) and it will be getting colder soon, and it does get freezing up here. I dont have a garage but really want to finish my baja project up soon. I have never taken apart or even touched a transmission before. Would my 68 bug be a good starter for that, it slips out of second gear. Or would i be in way over my head to do something like that over the winter.

First, are you sure the problem is in the tranny?

If your shifter is out of adjustment it could cause second gear not to engage completely and subsequently pop out. What shape are the shift rod bushing and the shift rod coupler in?

All three of these are a lot easier to check and fix than tearing into a tranny.

the biggest question is. How is the front tranny mount? if that is broken, the transmission torque will pull the trany up in the opposite dirrection of the tire. i.e pulling the gear out of place.
