a freind of mine just bought a 71' super for $100 it is basicly just the shell and glass but its in great shape.....the guy he got it from had alot of other stuf and i bought a manx pan with tranny,a tunnel and pan head,2 b/j front ends,one rear trialing arm and 4lug to chevy adapter,a full set of fiberglass street fenders a front and rear cage and a handful of other stuff for.........$30....yes 30 bucks for it all.any way our plan is to cut the panhead off just behind the front bulk head(were the body sits)and swap in the ball joint front in......so my question is will the regular baja kit fit the front of a 71' super ? could it be made to fit ? thanx

I think not, if it a round window. If it's flat windows...Not sure if the Super is wider than a normal bug.

yea,its the flat glass style....i have heard it both ways on them being wider than a standerd bug.

The 71 and 72 Super were the same body as a standard Bug from the front edge of the cowl back. The foot box is the same shape. So once you have cut off the inner structure back to the footbox, and trimmed the front 1/4 panels to clear the 1-piece Baja front clip, the body is the same. The regular front clip will fit right on.

The tunnel is different from the front bulkhead forward, so it is not so easy to adapt the standard front pan head on and result in something strong enough. Even street use requires some fabricating to splice it together well.

I suggest installing a cage and building front structure like you will see in other threads or in the off road forum on The Samba to support the front beam. Might as well stretch the wheelbase about 5 or 6" while you're at it. And I would install a kingpin beam instead of the ball joint. I know you have the BJ beam, but maybe you could trade it for a kingpin?

Back of the car is the same as standard, of course.

MojaveRacer knows his stuff for damn sure.

It can be done, but it won't be easy. Of course, nothing that's REALLY cool is easy anyway. I always wanted to A-Arm a late model Super with that big ole curved windshield, just to be different.

we were actually planning to cut both cars in half just in front of the shifter....cuting at a angle so there is more surface area to weld to then gussiting the inside of the tunnel with some think steel,then replace the floor pans sit the body back down and run braces from the beam and tie them into the feet area then into the cage.

Why not just put it on a standard pan? Easy Easy.
Mojave has it right. Once you strip off the super stuff back to the hoodline, it is all the same.
