I am looking for some tires for my baja. with the ford 2.3, and a 3 rib trans. was trying o decide on tire size, and what kind.

thinking about all terrains, and 31X10.5, but open to input.

looking for an all around tire, and keeping my eyes open for some paddles later.

I am running the treadwright retreads. They are inexpensive and an all around good tire. I am running the muds but they have all terrains too.

I run goodyear m/t 31 10.50 They seem to work good. the gearing kills me but i should have that fixed when i get the bus tranny in.

what you might want to do is borrow some elses tires to see if you like the gearing...try 31's 32's and so on...
i had 30's on my rail with a 22r and 002, it was way to low for street use...

ok, I'll leave the 30's on it now till I get it running. theywont survive a trip, but I can test gearing with them by the house.

just trying to get all my ducks in a row to make it to glamis sometime in December. even though the paint project is going crazy slow so far.

I have 30x12.5 on my baja... The car needs a 5th gear my diff is a 4.37 with a VW bus over drive of .89 I think. somthing like a 4.12 or even 3.90 would be better if you do lots of street/highway driving. if you do more off road and like that real low 1st and 2nd then th 4.56 is the way to go. I tried to split it the best I could for both types of driving. next time I think I will go witha 4.12 for a little better street driving as this is what I do most of the time now any way.

if you have a 002 gear ratio is 5.38 thats a 3 rib
002 5 rib is 4.86
091 is 4.56.... Wink

ok thanks, so I have 5.38 then with the 3 rib. so I might want to think about 31 or 32inch tires.

I'll try the 30's I've got before I toss em though.

another question, my front end is wide five, but the rear is a 4 bolt pattern?

I need to change hubs to go to a wide 5 in the rear right? if so when I go to longer arms I'll look into getting some other rear hubs, microstubs if I can find a deal on em sometime even.

Not true! You can use a variety of rear drums, discs or hubs. The early 5-lug axles had short spline sections where the drum mounts. The 4-lug had longer spline sections, but the same size and spline count. An early drum will slide right onto a late shaft. All of them use the same 4-bolt backing plate / caliper bracket plate mounting on the 4 bearing housing bolts. The longer spline axles were also used in early 5-lug buses, Things and Type 3s. All of these are bigger stronger drums than early bugs used. A lot of aftermarket disc brake kits are available to fit long splines and have 5-lug hubs. To put early short spline drums on long spline axles, you must use matching backing plates and put a spacer on the axle outboard of the drumand inside of the nut. The stock bearing thrust spacers work quite well for this.
