I've been skimming the web for all the little tidbits I can gather, but kinda come up a bit dry in major custom stuffs. I know it's been done and I only want to do it once. I'm learning about the 6 rib cases and nose shift, but I still don't know what year bus a 6 rib came out of, I don't know if I have to change input shafts, etc and what am I supposed to do about CVs/shafts?
Anyone have any links to a build like this? I plan on going longer/wider with the trailing arms, decide on those after I know what shafts to run, that may determine what arms I go with.
My ride is a 74 Baja, my plan is 33s, and I'd prefer it to not break when my daughters are in the back thinking I'm the sh*t....!
Input please?

for a lil' schooling.... www.thesamba.com/vw/fo...p?t=143138

you should run a bus trans just for the fact that there stronger, 3,5,6 rib, best is 6 rib 091. see link above.

heres a pic of mine after i just bolted it together....

Crap... I was on that thread all night last night, reading, looking at pretty pictures, clicking the insane multitude of links on things I don't understand...and not once did I see the date(that's posted above the very first picture...) of the 091 trans!
Is there a place to simply buy these trannies out right? I'm HOPING to find one locally and maybe swap my running motor and trans for one...
And I don't like the idea of an open diff... a full on spool is probably not idea either, but I'm thinking a locker would be the ticket. Never seen or priced one for a VDub yet...

Crap, it is! Thanks for thinking of me man...I feel warm and fuzzy all over!
About 30 seconds ago I also just got off the phone with a guy about an hour from me with my 6-rib bus trans! What's better than that...? About 10 minutes into our conversation we discover that not only did we know each other, we've clinked beers MANY MANY times at camp as we were old rockcrawlin buds 5-6 years ago! I feel a bus trans heading my way soon...!
Thanks for the thought, it's appreciated!

donsbusbox.com, right here in phoenix. Don is on this site periodically, and specializes in (can you guess?) YES! Bus transmissions! (hence the name).

I think that's his username on this board also. He does Superdiff installs, close-ratio gears, etc.

For adapters or trans? I checked his prices on trans and they were still above my wallet. Especially if I don't have a core. Plus there's the whole shipping thing...

Hey, and you don't happen to have a build page on your Baja do you?? VERY clean Bug, I like it. I want a mix between yours and NPetrics!

The 22r? I don"t know what stock is, but he's got a race block with some fancy stuff in it and a 20r head on the 22r block bringing compression up a bit, says it should be in the 120-130hp range... I just want it cuz it's tuff as hell!

I don't think you can go wrong with anything that says toyota.

i used to be a diehard vw in vw's but I am begining to change my ways. It is hard to get a ton of power out of one with out tons of bucks. I think a toyota or pinto motor is a better idea if you want to pour on the power for less dollars. It sure makes since to me.

To get 120 hp out of a vw isn't hard, but to make it stay together and be reliable just costs to much.
