That's a very generic question. You can do it with suspension (to a point), or a body lift. Both have their pros and cons. Also depends on what year (type of suspension) you have. Shocks, by themselves, will not lift a VW, since the weight of the car is supported at all four corners by using torsion bars/leaves. Body lifts are just a spacer between the pan and the body, so you gain no ground clearance or suspension travel (which is what EVERYONE wants, right!?).

Pick up one of the books listed in your other thread and peruse the suspension section. Once you understand the basics of how this simple suspension setup works, you'll have a much better understanding of what people on here are trying to say.

Getting a copy of Building Bajas and Buggies would be a great book to buy. A set of 235 70 15 tires will get you some more ground clearance and go just about anywhere. Oktr6r is using 30x10.50 tires on all four and gets through mud holes with ease. He did give up some power as a stock engine struggles to move them in 3rd and 4th gear.

The wonderful thing about a VW is the "lift" can be done for FREE! Once you read the "bible" things will be clearer. To get a free lift, cut and turn the beam to get lift in the frt; re-index the torsion bars in the rear to get lift. Do be careful, you do not want to get crazy in the rear with a swingaxle. They become "not so fun" when hitting bumps and turning when lifted too far.
