Hey there. So im looking to put on some trailer tail lights (2 wires) and I checked the wires that the previous owner had left hanging in the back for the taillights and they arn't getting any power. Any ideas? None of the fuses look burt out. And everything else is working fine.

Get a test light and start checking the wires from front to rear, and check the fuses anyways VWs have a habit of just burning just the tips of the fuses off.

Make sure you are testing them with the ignition on. And if you are going to run 2 wire tail lights, you will need a trailer wiring adapter because the VW is 3 wires.

walmart, autozone, and maybe checker carry the 3/4 wire to 2/3 wire trailer light adapter kits.

aby where from $11 to $25 depending on where you find it.

not hard to wire in, just need to test each wire for proper connectio/ function.

I know what your thinking...GET A NEW WIRING HARNESS. And eventually all the wiring will be replaced. I just want to get some tail lights on so I can get down the street to get the pan welded. So bad wiring aside. I dont know what year wiring it is. The bodys a 70, engines a 73 and the pans a 60. It could be anyone of those years, or none. I'm not seeing any of the brake wires. How do I find them!!! The wires that are coming out the back of my bug I THOUGHT were for my brake lights arnt reacting when the brake is pressed and mutimeters on them. Help?

do you have a pick of the wiring harness that comes out below the rear window vent inside the fire wall?

it should have 3 or 4 wires. some solid some striped.

those are the tail/ turn/ stop wires. did you meter there?

now there should be a fuse up front that controlls those circuits.

did you find the fuses?

are you teasting the lights with the key "on"?

First place I would start is the brake light switch. Simple ohm test with the pedal depressed. I've seen these go out alot...cuz they get used so much. Wiring is unlikely unless ALL wires got open ckts. Odds are against it. I believe it's on the master cyl

howdy. So I figured out what wiring diagram my car matches and I located the stop light switch. I haven't tested it yet. But i cant find the wire that comes up from the switch connected to the fuse box. In place of it is a red wire that is connected in its spot that seems to just head into the car. So making slight progress. I dont have a turn signal arm so I hadn't even tested the blinkers. BUT GUESS WHAT I FOUND!!! lol. I found a 3 way switch that had been connected to the emergency lights. So up is left turn signal and down is right lol. My car really is screwed up.lol. We will see what the problem turns out to be. thanks for all your help guys!
