Im lookin to build something with 4 seats that i can use for the desert and dunes. Ive always liked bajas and would like to build something other than a basic sandrail. Money doesnt fall out of trees for me so im looking for something with a low starting price ie baja bug. Im figuing i wouldnt be able to dune it with the family at 1st but it will still be fun out in the desert. Eventually though i would have dumped enough cash blood sweat and more CASH so it can perform well in the dunes.

So heres my questions! (A) is this a doable project or would i be wasting my time? (B) what would it take to make it dunable...not bad ass(at first) but dunable? ohh yeah i plan on making it offroad only, not street legal.

It can be done but without knowing two factors not easy to pin down, how much money do you want to throw at it and how do you plan on driving it?

Well like i said im looking for a low $ entry point but as i can i eventually would like to at least go mid travel on the suspension and i have the hookups on a big bore motor. As far as driving it if the kids are in it of course ill take it easy but when its just the boys ill push it hard...that being said its no trophy truck so im not expecting to act as one, but thats the reason i plan on bringing it in on a trailer!

how many times a year do you really think you will go to the dunes ?
building a budget baja for the dunes will be ok for a season or two, but than you will want a sandrail.... Wink

I agree with fasthoe. Besides, if your talking about a dedicated duner, a rail is a LOT easier & cheaper to build (or buy used).

I say, can I get an AMEN?

If minimizing the investment is your aim, you almost always have the potential to do better by buying something already built, especially if it needs just a few finishing touches. If you've got a great hookup on a motor, buy a good roller that already has a good trans in it. And for a family of 3-4, I'd also HIGHLY recommend rail over baja. Sorry, but that makes the most sense.

Deals are getting easier and easier to find these days (for unfortunate reasons). Sad

I have found that Baja's are just to heavy for the sund, not saying it can not be done. but a rail is the way to go for the dunes.

I had my baja in glamis while it was still a beam/swing axle car. Ran dirt tires cause the paddles didnt clear the body and was able to cruise around out there........before I caught it on fire..........I just couldnt play in all the big stuff.

I think i should be alright out there now Wink

Well I know that you wanted to stay cheap but here is a link to a very dunable Baja with a lot of ideas that could transfer to a cheap car, leave out the subaru and possible the coilover and just do a mid travel vw suspension.. hope it gives you some ideas and good luck with the project if you start it ! www.americansandassoci...&sk=t&sd=a
