So I got that 1600sp from the guy for 200 with all the chrome still in the box. He had the old shroud and everything too so I am going to use all the old stuff on this motor while I slowly rebuild the 1835. My problem is, the solex 30 that he said he rebuilt. We got the motor all put back together last night and back in the car. But the float on the carb is stuck. (Not my diagnosis as I know next to nothing about carbs. Thats what my old man said.) HE also said that depending on how much it would cost, iy may be easier just to go to BAP and pick up a rebuilt carb and not worry about this one. So, do any of you guys have a working carb sitting around that you would like to sell me for real cheap? lol. Just thought I would check here bevfore running to BAP or anything like that.

I had to buy one (30 pict) to pass emissions, seems to me it was around $160 (but that was a new one, I'm sure a rebuilt one is cheaper - but your still going to have to set/tune it). These carbs are so simple, I'd look for rebuild/tuning info online and take it off and try to figure out what's wrong. Buy a gasket kit, they're cheaper. Simple carbs tend to have simple problems.

Take it apart yourself and take a look. Carb kits are really cheap and there's tons of info out there about how to rebuild them. They're pretty simple. Heck... what have you got to lose if you already have a bad carb... ten bucks for a kit????

Try it. Why not?

So I bought a kit and my dad and I looked it over and did all we could do to get it running, but he said it looks like it is unfixable. The needle and seat doesn't want to disengage even with the longer needle and seat and all the washers and gaskets to lower it on it. It will run at full throttle for a minute but then flood itself and leak fuel everywhere. Plus, even if we did get it running good, the guy I bought it and the motor from had rebuilt it he said and either he or his son lost the throttle arm for it so we would hae no idle adjustmant anyhow. Got a call in to a few of my old man's buddies who have vw powered rails to see if anybody has an extra carb laying around. I will let you all know how it goes.

That's too bad. Biggest enemies of carb rebuilding: Force, impatience and losing stuff. (Hate to admit it, but I speak from the perspective of personal experience)

Perhaps there's too much fuel pressure and it's not allowing the needle and seat to close. If you have an electric pump, take it off and throw it away. If you have a stock pump with too much pressure, you can add gaskets underneath it to shim it up and lower the pressure. It should be around 2.5-3 PSI. What arm do you need? Maybe I have one laying around that I can mail you. Find a parts breakdown in a book or on the net and post it, along with whatever part you need. I'm sure someone reading this has one laying around.
