Also, to eliminate everything...

Take the starter out. Take some jumper cables from the battery, positive to large lug on starter, negative to the body of the starter, hold the starter with your foot on the ground, use a screwdriver to jump from main lug to solenoid lug. It should spin and spring out and spring out fairly fast and hard.

Cool. Thats actually what I have been doing minus taking it out and using jumpers. I will give this stuff a shot tonight hopefully. Picked up some new aluminum adjustable pushrod tubes from BAP on my lunch today too.

Aren't Starter issues GREAT!! Very Happy

i had a similar problem back in April around Buginfestation III, but my problem was the starter motor itself, it just died. The fact that my wireing harness was twine and coat hangers held together with chewing gum didn't help the situation much either... Shocked Laughing

BEST OF LUCK TO YA!

hope you get her started...one of these days... Wink Rolling Eyes

Congrats on the new purchase by the way! Very Happy

Thanks Preston!
So last night me and my buddy took the starter out again and tested it like Sample said with the jumper cables. It spun, but did not shoot out. So, we headed to autozone to get it replaced, and it tested fine there. Shot right out and spun. So they wouldn't warranty it and replace it for me. I know it sounds like a battery issue, but I had the battery tested too and it had something like 540 cold cranking amps which should be more than enough power. Who's got more ideas? HAHA!! I am at a loss gentlemen.

It is the starter, I should have never bought the autozone starter. I should have bought a genuine Bosche or HI torque one. Must have banged just right for them to get it to pop out. Uhhhhhhggggggggggg! Sorry that this is turning into an ordeal.

No worries man! Its not your fault at all! I knew full well when I bought it from you that it needed a little work. I still feel like I got a good deal and there are absolutely no hard feelings towards you man. I will go PM BugZyla now and see what he can do for me.

Remembering that a calm attitude and low voice brings results, I'd take it back to AutoZone, ask to speak to the manager and explain that it appears to be a intermittent problem, that even IF it works for them, you are suspect of it and to be satisfied, you'd like another starter. IF no results, I'd thank him for his time and ask how to speak with his superior in the zone office. IF he says there isn't one or whatever, go to the 'net and look up AutoZone national headquarters, call and ask to speak to the CEO or presidents office. Calmly explain the situation concentrating on your dissatisfaction as a customer. You'd be amazed what keeping your cool and being oh so polite to people does in situations like this.
Also, be certain to ask the name of each person you speak with, write it down and refer back to them by name when you talk to the next level up.
I've gotten fantastic results even by calling the Governors office of Arizona re;a problem with a state agency. Attitude, tone of voice, courtesy.

When I did get it tested at AutoZone I asked them to go ahead and replace it anyways just to see if that was the problem. They wouldn't do it because I must have mentioned that it was on the car when I purchased it. I guess the warranty is non-transferrable. Think I should go back down and act like it was me that bought it?

I'd get the buyers phone number that he uses at AutoZone, give that to them, watch the screen and say "yep, that's me" when it comes up. Or, ask him for the receipt if he's got it.
OR......meet him halfway for a burger and have him go in and exchange it, then get the new receipt. Deceit doesn't bring good luck, but not answering questions they don't ask or volunteering information is this side of the "okey dokey" line of ethics in my book.

Haha! I do have Sample's numbers. The "yep thats me" line is what I was thinking too.

Well, AutoZone doesn't carry it and won't order it. But, the big Checker on 19th and Bell had one, so I picked it up and installed it. Starts like new! I hit the ignition and that thing fired up like it has been sitting there ready for action!!! New adjustable aluminum pushrod tubes from BAP to be installed tomorrow!

Oh, BTW, I am still not 100% sure what was wrong with thte other starter, but when I went to pull the old one off, my elbow bumped the ground strap from transmission to the chassis. I had looked at it before and not noticed anything wrong, but when I bumped it, I noticed it moved more than it should. It seems as though the ground strap was not connected to the chassis. The end where the bolt goes through to the chassis had been completely torn. It was still sitting there looking like it was connected until I bumped it. So, I tried putting the new ground strap in with the old starter, and still nothing. But, once I put the new starter in, it started right away. Could the ground strap being loose/disconnected have caused some sort of a short in the old starter? Even thought it tested fine at Checker and AutoZone, it never would work in the car. I am glad I got it fixed, but now, just curious as to what happened with the old one to cause it to die like that.

bingo.
Wouldn't hurt to put a additional strap on too. And remember how old that wiring is. I always preach on here running additional ground wires from the tailights, headlights and turn signals to the body. Simple 14/16 gauge with eyelet end, self tapping sheet metal screws on the body end, attached to the mounting studs on the lights. Nag Nag Nag....

Good advise (nag?) oldfart! I worked as a electronics tech for a bunch of years and nothin' makes for more screwey electrical system behavior than bad grounds! We're talkin' beat-your-head-against-the-wall kind of stuff here.
